Ahead of the 11PM episode, the AP reports that Stewart did not go easy on Cramer, even after JC did some pre-show buttering up of the TDS host:
NEW YORK – Jon Stewart hammered Jim Cramer and his network, CNBC, in their anticipated face-off on “The Daily Show.”
In an interview taped Thursday afternoon that went far beyond its allotted time, Stewart repeatedly chastised the “Mad Money” host and CNBC for putting entertainment above journalism. He also accused the financial news network of willfully ignoring corporate dishonesty.
For his part, Cramer disagreed with Stewart on a few points, but mostly agreed that he could have done a better job foreseeing the economic collapse. Cramer called himself a “fan of the show” and said his network was “fair game” to Stewart’s criticism.

Where is gasbag when you need him!!
Entertainment above journalism? From Jon Stewart? You didn’t see me calling out Pol Pot when i was killing all those Cambodian prostitutes.
Oh wait, he’s “fake news”, so he gets to say whatever he wants.
Madoff clearly missed one promising investor.
jim cramer could buy jon stewarts fucking theater and have it demolished
this whole faux-feud is super-gay and trivial compared to the real shitstorm about to go down between cuomo and b of a
TRB
@2- perhaps you should enroll in a reading comprehension course. it says that STEWART was chastising CRAMER for putting entertainment above journalism.
idiot.
@3- um, their net worth is probably not that different.
So, was Stewart’s comment about Cramer intended to be an entertaining or journalistic critique?
Are you telling me that “The Daily Show” is a fake news show????
~The Forehead Slapper
@4, ummm whatever
I’ll bite
stewart’s net worth is not a quarter of cramers
cramer put away somewhere between 8 and 9 figures at cramer berkowitz and has spent the last 4 years on a GE salary, plus incentives for mad money
not even mentioning anything frompublishing his multiple best selling books, his stake in TSCM and his real estrate holdings in Dutchess County and elsewhere
Jon Stewart, who i like very much, is an employee of viacom. sumner is senile and cheap, and stewart only gets a raise when he threatens to go to NBC each time his contract is up for renewal.
@7- you are a dumbass. at most cramer is worth 100 mm, and stewart is probably at around 60 mm.
@5- guess you’ll have to watch but it probably achieved both. taking down cnbc for being a sham of massive proportions = journalism, saying it in a funny way = entertainment.
Listen motherfucker this is cramer. LOOK ME UP ON FORBES
I haven’t seen tonight’s show, but I saw what Stewart did to “Crossfire” when he was a guest of their show. He demolished the hosts and it was a thing of beauty. Crossfire RIP.
Doubt he’ll do the same with Cramer, but Cramer has a self-destructive propensity. It will take more time.
@ 4 perhaps your mother should have enrolled in an abortion course
i got it. See Stewart puts entertainment above journalism, but then bashes others for doing so. But then doesn’t accept the same criticism since he “doesn’t pretend to be anything else”…my ass.
The fact that I had to explain that clearly indicates Fox Business was light 1 viewer tonight.
This really makes the freepers’ heads explode. Between the Obama “bear rally” and the putdown of CNBC/Cramer…
“Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., helped steered millions of dollars in bailout funds to a bank on whose board her husband served, the New York Times reported Thursday.
The bank also didn’t appear to meet the requirements for receiving the money, the newspaper reported.
Waters, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, arranged a meeting in September between Treasury officials and the chief executive of OneUnited, one of the country’s largest black-owned banks, which requested $50 million in special bailout funds.”

She has her fans here.
13 What’s a freeper?
stewart is old news.
Stewart got clownfaced on Crossfire.
OMG Maxine Waters is a nut case.
It’s obvious most of the commenters don’t watch The Daily Show. Yes, it has a comedic spin and some outright skits, but it also has excellent reporting. Not the “instant-breaking news” kind, but the kind of excellent news coverage of things which don’t get mentioned on mainstream U.S. news media. The boys and girls at TDS are sharp and obviously pay a lot of attention to international news feeds. They are also very willing to call “BS” on important people when it’s called for; something else that mainstream U.S. news media doesn’t do.
Not that Cramer is an important person.
@12 are you perhaps a middle America retard?
@19–has it ever called BS on Obama?
@14- thanks, but that was covered this morning. learn to search. or scroll.
@17– um ok. that would explain why tucker carlson was fired after stewart ripped him a new one. fucking idiot.
Bess – do you ever feel like you are herding retards?
I’m told Cramer strumped a dump in The Daily Show’s dressing room.
@21- yes, actually it has made fun of the current administration. hilarious, though, that you’re fucking on stewart (and obama’s) ass after the new president has been in office for LESS THAN 60 DAYS. They didn’t start tearing Bush a new one daily ’til at least a month after that. Why don’t we wait a couple more weeks to see if BO turns out to be the same monumental fuck up as our last prez.
LOUD NOISES!!!!!!
can someone tell Cramer to stop shopping at Century 21 already, guy’s rich as hell, should at least look the part, instead of a paranoid schizoid…
…oh wait, nevermind
if any of you assholes actually watch the interview you’d know that JS is right and if you guys don’t agree then you are either happy to see the financial strength of this country crumble or are too stupid to realize what you helped create
@29
Back to Yahoo buddy. Stewart is coming off like an ignorant schmucko reppin’ the populist “rich v. poor” garbage. Cramer is hangin’ in there as well as anyone else could, and that’s coming from a Cramer-hater.
Guy says every episode “do you own homework, don’t just listen to my 30-second fauxnalasys,” if people are too dumb/lazy to listen to him then f’ em.
Also, in fairness, I think the brokerage business is a massive sham and most people have little-to-no business being involved public equities (etc).
#29 = art school grad
Anyone going to Miss March tomorrow?
Cramer was very gracious. Stewart was well, Stewart. I think he was misguided,asking Cramer to take responsibility for an entire network.
Jon Stewart brought out the phenomenal point that I have thought for years. CNBC is a bunch of f-cking buffoons. It’s a damn shame that Bloomberg TV station is limited in NYC, and buried where it can’t be found on other cable systems. That Bloomberg guy has a seriously informative TV (and radio) station.
Merkin @12 hit the nail on the head.
Leibowitz is to “but I’m just fake news comedy”, as Al Sharpton is to _________.
I’m surprised Stewart was that harsh. The video clips seemed like a cheap shot, although I can understand why they’d make him upset… Cramer looked like a sad dog in the corner.
Stewart clearly lost a lot of money in the past year. Cramer seems to be his unintentional scapegoat for his general mockery of CNBC.
In all honesty, Stewart is probably right that CNBC should ask more of the tough questions instead of being an ad nauseam stream of idolatry of the kings of finance that it has been for the past decade. There’s a void in the financial news media that Fox Business certainly isn’t going to fill… Stewart seems to feel CNBC should be up to the task.
Cramer = unworthy opponent. Completely ambushed and eviscerated. Gasbag vs Stewart, now that would have been fun.
CNBC is full of stock pumping morons looking to transition into PR jobs. They deserve to get called out.
At least Cramer had the balls to go on Stewart’s show.
I’d like to see stewart get interviewed on squawk or fast money
Jimmy’s a masochist. He’s never had a problem hanging his head in shame and proclaiming what a bad boy he’s been. Stewart only got himself all worked up, wasted a bunch of air time not being very funny, and saved Cramer from having to pay someone from Craigslist to belittle and scold him tonight.
Total loss for Stewart
Cramer was a big disappointment.. CNBC sinks deeper..
JS spent the a.m. learning finance from Maxine Waters, he should have been chewed up and spit out. Unfortunately Cramer checked his balls in the green room.
Hey CNBC. GUT THE STATION on-air ‘talent’ like they do to to your local news channels. Bring in some newspeople that are truly knowlegeable and respected. So when a CEO or some other scumbaggio tries to blow spoke up their asses, they will promptly be called out.
As opposed to Becky just standing there in her ridiculous cross-legged, flamingo-stance that says “Gee,Warren you just made me wet”
Cramer did fine. Jon made some good points. All in all I think it was a wash. Agree that at least Cramer had the balls to go on the show.
I feel like am going to puke everytime Erin Burnett tells Cramer ‘Oh, I love you Jim!” on Streetsigns!
In fact today he answered her “I love you too!”
I would be interesting if he, indeed, is nailing her.
To be fair, Cramer looked like an idiot. While the people that read this blog understand the flaws in jon boy’s arguments, the (much larger) audience that JS caters to will come away thinking that JS is the most brilliant financial mind they have ever heard, and that the people running CNBC are idiots. Not good for the ol’ consumer confidence numbers. Put a fork in Cramer, he’s done.
Jon Stewart strumped a dump all over CNBC tonight
Ratigan should have been on the show instead.
Seems like Jon Stewart’s dual reality is starting to take over the minds of his fans/viewers.
So he supposedly run a commedy show, and in his own words he comes on after two drunk puppets (no longer) and half of his viewers are stoned.
That is the standard argument forwarded anytime the is any criticism of his show or questions around his partisan nature.
Now if that is true, then why does his commentary on journalistic integrity of CNBC even matter? By his own definition anything that he says is moot in the real world?
Therein lies the catch. He (and his followers) WANT his words to matter but they conveniently retreat behind the ‘we are inconsequential’ ruse the moment they are challenged.
What is lacking is balls. Hey, here’s an idea. Why not stand up and accept the fact that you are a liberal shill who is also an entertainer. I appreciate guys like Bill Maher for that – at least they own up to what they are!
And for the record, what riled Stewart about CNBC was not what they have been doing – which they have been doing forever. He got ticked off that they dared challenge Obama and set off the tea party counter movement. So he playing the role of court jester / propagandist / apologist / mouthpiece to perfection here.
Splicing together clips of Stewart and proving that he is a liberal propagandist is all too easy. Why doesnt he himself try that for a change? Would be really easy.
For the record, Cramer is a raging idiot on his show. That is what the show is about. He is otherwise a very smart guy and leads a much better and secure life than Stewart.
@48
What a delusional rant. Go to bed.
“And for the record, what riled Stewart about CNBC was not what they have been doing – which they have been doing forever. He got ticked off that they dared challenge Obama and set off the tea party counter movement.”
completely wrong, you moron.
“He is otherwise a very smart guy and leads a much better and secure life than Stewart.”
seriously? reassess your life. you don’t know shit about shit.
Stewart use to fill in for Kurt Loader
on MTV back in the day
@49, Leave that bong alone and go get some munchies. Stewart and Colbert are OVER.
does anyone have a link to the interview?
@41
Cramer so pussied out. As JS spewed out idiotic, uninformed conspiracy theory nonsense, Cramer just sat there and agreed. It really was like watching a bad puppy be scolded. JS had a few decent points about how shitty CNBC is, but they were lost due to his sheer ignorance of the subject. Leftist slant is cool until you sound like a fucking populist moron. Not that most DS viewers will know the difference.
BTW, anyone with a reasonable intellect stopped watching CNBC after the dotcom bubble.
Stewart: FAIL
Cramer: FAIL
Both those guys should be forced to eat a couple of pounds of cheddar cheese and then go for a long walk in the desert.
@54 You’re polluting my internet.
Cramer is a pussy
@56
Crying because JS is not informed does not change how poor he did. He eviscerated what could have been a telling interview on Cramer’s sell side BS. His attempts to talk about Wall Street were quite sad. “Wall Street leverage 35:1,” sort of like a subprime mortgage, no?
As a direct result, he’s neither exposed Cramer nor educated any of his viewers on the matter. All the while he was not even funny. Still worse is the fact that the entire flannel crowd at NYU has committed his statements to fact. Had he done research he could have put a stake through the heart of the biggest clown on television. I call that a FAIL.
If the comments here at Dealbreaker are still filled with those of “Wall Street insiders,” then no wonder we’re in the economic mess we’re in now. Given the so-called analysis many of you have proffered regarding the Stewart-Cramer interview, I’d say you lot must have the reading comprehension of a sixth grader. But since it was on video, no reading was involved. All you had to do was listen, and the majority of you of you failed at that spectacularly.
And to think I used to criticize all the morons at ATL for writing and reasoning like children. The comments in this thread are even more of an embarrassment to the financial industry than CNBC.
How the fuck is better financial reporting going to force stupid and lazy people to learn difficult and dynamic concepts?
Stewart spews the exact same populist shit as Barney Frank, but is infinitely more rhetorically gifted.
I think he’s using this as an opportunity to position himself as a viable political candidate.
If Stewart was intellectually honest, he would have encouraged his viewers to educate themselves. Instead he actually helps us bankers and shifts the blame from the perpetrators of financial mismanagement to the media.
I’m glad I have that guy looking out for me, he’s got my vote.
@59
Really?
“I’d say you lot must have the reading comprehension of a sixth grader. But since it was on video, no reading was involved. All you had to do was listen, and the majority of you of you failed at that spectacularly.”
I’d say you lot? That must be white-shoe lawyer talk.
Cramer consistently appears, on every show but his own, to be on the verge of tears. How stable is he?
@59
Good addition to the conversation. That comment truly contributed to our understanding of the interview, the crisis and our own intelligence.
Thank you, I will rethink my life now
PS
For some of us English is our 3rd language
Cramer’s appearance on the DS may be the closest any of us will ever come to seeing a public hanging. And I do not feel sorry for the ‘victim’ whatsoever… just with some of his colleagues (many, many more objectionable than him) were forced to sit beside him. Take that, CNBC! What a gaggle of assholes….
It’s hilarious that people are DEFENDING CNBC in ANY WAY SHAPRE OR FORM. What a bunch of clowns – like wall st executives, just look at their underlying interests and it’s easy to see how the act – CNBC needed to cause exuberance in the run-up and panic in the downturn – FOR RATINGS. Anyway who takes this network mildly serious is a complete MORON.
Seriously, start changing the way you THINK commenters of go find ANOTHER EFFIN CAREER.
@63…
“for some of us”. But not for you
“Did you make him stiff?” Lil Gaspipe breaks new ground, wonder why the query was not directed to short bus Becky? Inquiring minds want to know.
The fox business channel and bloomberg are not available in many areas of the ocuntry. Many people only have CNBC which they keep on with the sound off.
I cannot believe some of you asshats are actually defending Cramer and CNBC. Cramer came off like a sad sack totally unwilling to make any valid argument, making lame excuses and promising to do a better job (whatever that means). Could the interview have gone any worse for CNBC?
Anything to be on the other side of the “liberals”/flannel crowd/peasants. What a bunch of pricks!
69, Apparently in you binary worldview attacking Stewart = defending Cramer.
What was it that the other hippie said about reading comprehension a few posts back?
First of all, Stewart does put entertainment above journalism, as does CNBC. The difference is that JS and the Daily Show Spell it out in plain view, they don’t pretend to be a credible news source. CNBC puts up adds like “In Cramer we Trust”, and claims to be the be all end all of financial news. Cramer got throttled by JS. The clips were a low blow, but he caught Cramer in blatent lies, and that’s a fact. BUT, I think JS went about that with less tact than he could have, and to Cramer’s credit, once he realized how screwed he was, he admitted wrong and acted very humbly.
Fair comment 71. It’s obvious to see that Cramer and CNBC look like idiots following this. Give credit to Cramer for going on the show and not getting defensive, but there’s no denying that those clips being shown to a wide audience were damaging to Cramer and CNBC.
“We’re both snake-oil salesmen to a certain extent,” Stewart said. “But we do label it ‘snake oil’ here.”
Here’s a thought… the best comedy is derived from truth, reality, honesty and an ability to force an audience to be honest with themselves.
Stewart’s show is a satirical observation of current events and he’ll be the first to tell you that. To the best of my knowledge, JS has NEVER put himself out there as a financial expert – if anything, quite the opposite.
Kramer, to be fair, consistently urges his audience to do the research and due diligence for themselves; but at the same time touts his credentials and repeatedly makes buy and sell reccommendations that lesser experienced and savvy investors follow like lemmings… once you’re the self proclaimed captain of that ship you need to be prepared to go down with it. Cramer has admirably done that much at least, props to him for that.
17 – “Stewart got clownfaced on Crossfire.”
Yeah, BOY did he!
…
But I DO keep trying to find that “Crossfire” show on my old-timey channel clicker. I just keep running across Stewart’s show though…
Remember, Stewart picked a fight with Santelli and the “tea party” thing, not with the failings of Jim Cramer. Convicting Santelli for Cramer’s sins is like dismissing “South Park” because it’s on the same channel as a predictable poseur like Stewart.
Stewart’s larger problem is that CNBC is carrying serious, substantive criticism of the Administration’s economic policies. Some of it is knee-jerk stuff from guys like Kudlow. But the morning show has good staff who ask hard questions and get economic views from a variety of political leanings. Stewart can’t impeach criticisms of the Administration from Buffet or Welch, or discussion panels that include Corzine, Rendell and political liberals like McCollum.
It’s easier to lecture Cramer, who stepped into like a chump. Yeah, the whole circus act is stupid — but that isn’t the venue carrying the serious critique of the Administration.
It’s easy for Stewart to look good — he picks the guests, he choose the moment, he edits the footage. When things move against him, he changes the subject, just like he did last night. He’s not a Truth-Teller, he’s a Stage-Manager. He’s going to have a hell of a problem if the smart people start to rethink Obama.
54 – Wow. I would bet my life savings ($147.86) that this conversation most definitely happened a few times by people on the street:
“So, (insert bank president’s nickname here), do ya think these idiots are ever gonna figure out that you’re 30x leveraged and making kraaazy bets on these magical CDO tranches?”
“Nah, (insert ratings company Veep nickname here), those schmucks are still hoping their 401k is gonna shoot to the stars and they’re gonna retire like we are living now.”
(pause and a meaningful look)
(Laughter from both loud enough to wake up all the people around the Aruba-hotel pool out of their 2 PM Pina Colada stupor)
“That was a good one. Now, are we gonna be swappin wives again this weekend? that filly o’ yours is quite a tasty treat…”
@ 76 -
JS didn’t pick a fight with anyone. That CNBC montage he did last week was meant for the Santelli interview, which Santelli cancelled. So if anyone should shoulder the blame, it’s CNBC for cancelling Santelli after saying yes to the interview and then trying to hide under a rock, hoping for the best.
Blaming Cramer for Santelli’s sins? At what point in last night’s interview did Santelli’s name even come up? They are colleagues on the same network, sometimes appearing on camera together. When’s the last time you saw Stan or Kyle hanging out with Dora the Explorer? JS wasn’t after individual reporters, he was critizing the entire CNBC network, although he did say Faber was doing a good job.
Stewart’s larger problem is that CNBC is NOT carrying serious, substantive criticism of Wall Street’s practices.
Also, Stewart has lambasted plenty of Democrats — it’s just unfortunate for Republicans that they tend to screw up more, such as in the past 8 years.
Stewart is neither a stage manager or truth teller. He’s a social critic using a comedian’s repertoire. Like Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, etc.
Also, when did Stewart change the subject when things moved against him? Cramer mimicked a parrot most of the time: “We should’ve seen it coming. We need to do a better job. I’ve had CEO’s lie to my face.” Again and again and again.
First, I’ll grant that most the network is useless. The early morning show is, in my uncool opinion, very good, but they’re done when Squawk Box signs off.
But Stewart absolutely went after Santelli. He was prompted by the cancellation, he played the Santelli clip, his hook was that maybe the ‘losers’ had listened to CNBC. If the target was CNBC generally, there were many better faces than Santelli. CNBC’s absurdities have been out there for months, but weren’t worth Stewart’s attention until the tea party thing struck a nerve.
Stewart changed the subject last night: from Santelli’s principled and reasoned arguments against all these bailouts, to Cramer, who seems barely coherent.
Why is Stewart talking about CNBC while the President signs a bill full of the earmarks that he promised to end? Congressional Democrats have provided material for a month of shows, but Stewart doesn’t seem to bring any of it up. He has trained his audience to think they’re enlightened realists, but they aren’t tolerant enough to find their heroes’ foibles funny.
Stewart is a clever propagandist. He’s shifting attention from his first idea to something he’d rather talk about. And you’ve fallen for it. You watch him so people will think you’re clever — God knows you can’t find him funny — and instead you’re just another sheep. The joke, my friend, is on you.
&33………Hi..I live in the Chicagoland area and have Bloomberg TV, FOX BUSINESS NEWS…and yeah if I want more BULLSHIT…..CNBC. Check your cable company in the N.Y. area…N.J.,,,Conn……gotta be there soon. Al Chicago
