Former AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre Jr. is in a peculiar position right now. He will become chairman of the creatively renamed New GM once Old, Bloated, Failed GM emerges from bankruptcy. Washington is putting a lot of faith in its ability to pull off a "surgical bankruptcy" since they've told Ed his start date is likely going to be in August. If three Indiana pension funds can prolong Chrysler's surgical bankruptcy, Ed may be in for quite a wait.

I was in a few meeting with Whitacre several years ago when he was at SBC and I was a lame-o consultant. The guy would wear boots and a "Texas Tie"... 'twas quite the sight.
