Hoops apparently gave her betrothed a birthday card in April that read "Hope you have a fun day doing all the things people in prison wish they could do" to which Andy-boy, playing the part of the man-boy/bitch responded, "I wish I had my parents back," (before presumably locking himself in his room and shouting "I hate you!" and "I'm never coming out!"). Cathy then hissed, "Yeah, they were a really nice idea," and then, we're guessing, started mentally running through a list of people she might be able to stay with after extricating herself from Ponzi Nation.* Love (complicated by massive fraud), it's a motherfucker.
Other strained relationships are the mother-son ones between Ruth and Andy/Mark. Apparently the boys aren't speaking to her "not because they think she was involved [they don't] but because they believe her tendency to side with [Bernie], no matter what, when they complained to her about him, enabled his dirty deeds."
Oh, and the parents of Andrew's daughters' friends at Dalton are supposedly worried about letting their kids play at the Madoff residence out of fear that "assassins are crouching in vestibules."
*If she was going to be mean the least she could've done was be mildly amusing, and written something like "Since it's your birthday and all, what do you say I rig myself up in the black strap-on and simulate what it's going to be like for your Dad?

Blacks are not the only people that wear their identity so prominently. The way to overcome the stereotypes and presumptions that you resent is to simply keep on doing the right thing. And I guarantee that eventually they will go away or at least significantly diminish. Like they have for Jews, Italians, women, and everyone else who kept working at it. The victim thing only perpetuates the problem. Could be why immigrants so often succeed. There have been amazing strides already - culminating with the election of a black president.

52 Lets start with the easy ones: for women and Asians, identity is as prominent as that of blacks. Italians and Jews its more subtle but can truly be spotted a mile away. Ditto for gays. The idea though is not to become invisible, but instead to avoid the hurt of stereotypes and presumptions. So back to my original comment: keep at it and those things will go away. Playing the victim card prolongs the process.

Much more to do with your and your colleagues' visceral reaction when the black guy gets considered for promotion (clients will be "intimidated", like the guy but...(insert your untested generalization here)). It's what happens behind closed doors during review/hire/promotion decisions everyday across the country that matter. In your list above, women are the only class to face the types of negative stereotypes that hinder advancement. About the only correct assertion in your argument is the notion that this adversity can be overcome by the most tenacious of spirits-- Obama comes to mind.

Some random reactions: 1) the playing field has improved significantly and is a lot more level than you think 2) there's actually an advantage to being a certain type of black guy - the preppy type - quota is filled and everyone feels comfortable 3) at the end of the day there are a lot of subtleties go into promotions. How do you think about fat people for example? Effeminate gay guys? Do you really think promotions are dealt out in a truly fair and objective way. At the end of the day: deal with it.

@58- 53 here. don't get me wrong, things have dramatically improved in last 25-30 years. It's this notion that blacks' victim complex is the main reason for lack of advancement that I found most troubling. The US storyline is this country is completely meritocratic-- the best get the promotion. I think we both agree the ideal is far from reality...But we continue to make strides.
If you were faced with the daily nuisances that come with bring black or a women, you'd perhaps have a little more (I can't believe I'm about to say it) empathy (there goes my RNC card).
And yes I have a bias against flaming gay guys and fat people.
Recognizing this, I try to test and retest my assumptions when it's job related. Hard to admit and confront my biases -we are human, we all have them- but pretending I don't have them and the flaming guy is a victim doesn't help remove the vestiges of bias.

Go read the latest unemployment release broken down by race from the BLS. It seems as if Asians have a lower unemployment rate than whites! All of us racist crackers must be conspiring against ourselves!
Or is it perhaps that speaking in broad terms, Asians, Indians, and Jews (in America) value education slightly more than your typical white person? And that white people in turn value education more than the typical black or hispanic.
I went to public high school where whites were the minority (I am white). Please spare me the fucking white guilt, never met a minority in my life perspective of a fucking old-money WASP that 99% of you idiot posters have.
All of you "cultured" people have no fucking idea what the real world is about. Yes, there are white people on welfare as well as blacks. This has ZERO to do with the ABILITY of the races as much as it does their values (generally speaking).
The point is that certain cultures value education more than others and that is why there are discrepancies in achievement between races. When certain cultures value education over "bling" and "keeping it real," we will have made progress.
If two applicants apply for a job in PE, who is getting hired? A black guy with an MBA from HBS, or a white guy who was the Valedictorian of his class at state school? Hint: This is a personal story.
BTW, I would have hired the black guy too.

@67 - great points. Asians in the US indeed have low unemployment, but you'll see much higher unemployment rates in Asia. Decades ago, US immigration policy has had a ridiculously low (still pretty low) quota for Asian countries. You pretty much needed to fill a professional need (doctor, lawyer, engineer) that a US citizen could/would not. Hence, you see a lot of Asian physicians in rural areas etc.
You'll see second/third generation Asian-Americans are much more like us overly-entitled white Americans. By the third/fourth generation, Americans of immigrant families tend to prefer sports and other "cool" stuff over school as well. This trend of sloth in later generations has been going on since, well, the Irish and Italians immigrants back in the 1800s.
