California may be out of cash in a couple weeks, but they do have enough money to throw a multi million dollar victory parade for the Lakers. While the club may cover half the cost, the LA city budget will be covering the rest of the festivities unless there are private donations. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is adamant about this.
We're going to have a parade. People can complain about it, that's fine, but we're going to have a parade."
No word yet on who will be paying for Kobe's victory parade.

Lakers are covering half and private donors are covering the other half. This has been expressed by a few outlets. Come on DB, you're better than this.
Posted by guest , Jun 17, 2009 4:07PM
It's not the most interesting topic to begin with, but the fact that it's not even accurate...
Someone please excuse Greg for the rest of the day.

I guess you could blame the WSJ for more C-level journalism. Still... pretty much every other news outlet (ESPN, CNN, etc.) had this right.

How do you define irony???
Watching a bunch of multi-millionaires laud themselves on an elevated platform distinctly separated from the hoi polloi while being regaled by those very same peasants in a state burgeoning on a historic bankruptcy...
Oh yeah, AND paid for by the peasants...
Posted by guest , Jun 17, 2009 4:19PM
Unfucking believable. Why can't people just tell themselves no? This is why this country is going to shit.

The parade and Coliseum celebration came after several days of controversy over who should foot the bill. The City of Los Angeles originally planned to cover the estimated $2-million cost, but that spurred objections from members of city unions, who said the spending didn't make sense amid city budget cuts and layoffs.
Now, private donors are covering the costs.

I wonder if Gregg reads these posts. If so, I bet he's crying in the fetal position right now.
Posted by guest , Jun 17, 2009 4:42PM
Wouldn't it just be cheaper if they had some kind of rally in a fixed location... Greg's anus?

What!?!?

So Greg is full of shit? Then he should hand his badge at EOD.
Posted by guest , Jun 17, 2009 4:56PM
Journalistic abortion, Greg.
Try to thread some narratives next time. See below:
from espn:
Not far away, Letitcia Gutierrez was crammed against a chain-link fence separating fans from the parade route. But she didn't mind the cramped quarters.
-- she got to LA by disguising herself as a cocaine bag in a goddamn shark.
from usa today:
In the days before the parade, Fisher, Bratton and others pleaded with fans to remain well behaved and avoid a replay of the looting and vandalism Sunday night that led to 18 arrests
-- you can bet your sweet ass that Mark Walsh is long whatever they damaged.
Peace

California is discovering the same problem that blacks learned years ago and hispanics are about to learn - that the Democratic party knows their vote is a sure thing so they don't have to work to earn it. The reason Obama is telling California to sort out their own shit is because he can. Stupid tree-hugging Californians will still vote for him.

Greg,
I didn't support the rampant bashing of your writing. I think that there is a transitional period in any new job. I was hoping you would come around. But you ripped off an article from Opening Bell yesterday, and fucked this one all to hell...CA isn't paying for the parade. Get with it, or the readers are going to tear 13-14 new assholes.

The fact that the Lakers won the championship is the first sign that the world order is getting back on track, and may presage our economic recovery. The stupid Celtics winning last year was a clear sign that the world was off track.

@25 When Greg posted this story, the private donors had already stepped up. Greg is beyond help and it only makes sense that he came from the structured products desk of a failed bank.

To be fair, it is the bankrupt LA City that's doing the parade. The California budget has its own problems:
The state continues to hand out 10,000s of Blackberrys to employees, even during this crisis.
The state spent $4 million to produce this "Sid the Science Kid" TV show: http://pbskids.org/sid/ .
Over 4800 people get over $100k/year for life pensions from the state's CalPERS account.
