As California's desperation to close its $26 billion deficit grows by the day, a group known as the Marijuana Policy Project has offered up a way for the state to shave a billion off their tab- legalize and tax pot. The group launched a TV ad campaign last night in support of all those Californians armed with their three-footers just aching to help the state out by paying taxes on their Maui wowie.

i'm sure there won't only be revenue from taxing marijuana. occupancy tax revenue, taxes on airfare, etc. will increase due to the sudden influx of visitors to california. it will be the "green" rush of 2010!

sounds like a win win for california and pot smokers.

12- cartels? You are aware the 99% of the bud inthe country is grown in this country, right?
I think a bunch of mendo burners would be more than happy to split the pie if it meant not having to booby trap the back 40 and kill innocent trail runners/mountain bikers (customers) and kill their (actually justified) paranoia.
Just saying. Oh, and stick to the indica if the sativa gives you panic attacks. but you'll want to ski/ride onthe sativa once you calm down. Or so I'm told.

@14 You don't have a fucking clue about growers on public lands. You know what's easier than smuggling a ton of weed across the Mexican border? Smuggling a few cartel members and a bunch of illegals to tend the farms. You think they just want to pay some taxes? Bullshit.
They're farming free on government owned land that's meant to be used by the public. Unfortunately in many areas, the public is too fucking scared to use public access land. If you approach a field on a public road, you're harrassed and intimidated to the point that you just leave happy to still be alive. Private land owners have stumbled onto grow areas on their own land and can't do shit about it. Hunters have been waived off by gun toting illegals when they unknowingly came too close to the fields without seeing anything.
Hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail are stupid if they don't carry guns, it's that bad.
You think these dudes just want to buy a farm somewhere so they can peacefully grow weed and pay property taxes, water fees, and open their books to the IRS and FTB?
Mendocino is bad enough, start moving up the coast though, the closer you get to Oregon, the worse the situation gets.
I'm not a weed fan, but I am all for California legalizing the shit. Get rid of the gangs(at least partially), the MM(ditto), and get some revenue out of California's number one cash crop.

Why would you hire a woman who, quite possibly, is the ugliest effing person in North America to film the commercial?

@16
They were all stoned and remembered that she was hot 30 years ago before she embarked on a thirty year tour of the munchies?
Boys, let this serve as a public service announcement. Do not marry a hot chick who likes to smoke weed.
End PSA.

If it's legalized, ConAgra and ADM would put so much downward pressure on prices that the cartels would have to take up poppy farming to stay profitable.

@19
There are millions of loracets/vicodin/hydrocodone addicts that would LOVE for that to occur.

LEGALIZE/DECRIMINALIZE IT.

Hey - legalizing booze helped us get out of the Great Depression. Legalizing pot may do the same for us this time. Just put enough downward pressure on prices at the beginning to run all the cartels out of business (who would pay $100/oz if you can get it at the government store for $25?), and then slowly hike the taxes up. Just like boiling frogs.
