Specifically whoever’s in charge of his file at the Federal Bureau of Prisons, perhaps? Take a gander at this:
Picture 1707.png
As one of the math whizzes among us just pointed out, it looks like someone has decided that Ponz-Boy is getting out in 130 years, and not the 150 Judge Denny Chin sentenced him to. We’re pretty sure he does not have a chance for parole, and even if he did, wouldn’t we cross that bridge at a later date, rather than (very) prematurely assuming it’s gonna happen? We need a prison expert in the hizzous to tell us what the hell is going on here. Is this a typo? Did the clock start 20 years back on account of a decision by those who decide such things that living under Ruth’s freaky ass rules was probably as good as being locked up?

    Bess,
    Would you please do something about Greggers? 7 posts to his terrible 2. No pictures… Help us out here.

  3. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:24 PM

    he could make it to the age of 71+130, so this is a serious matter than needs to be addressed.

  4. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:24 PM

    Perhaps they are presuming good behavior? I think Federal sentences get reduced for that.

  5. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:25 PM

    @2 could you please do something about leaving lame, unnecessary posts about Greg a) at all b) on Bess’s posts? Really. Get a hobby.

  6. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:25 PM

    @4 why would they presume it before he even got there? is that not jumping the gun a bit?

  7. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:26 PM

    @1 well played, sir

  8. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:27 PM

    BM gives superb BJs. 110%. We had to make sure he kept up the effort, so we gave him a couple extra Jellos and knocked off a few years.

    That is the net present value of 150 years at the current discount rate.

  10. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:29 PM

    This is Ponzi math. You wouldn’t understand.

  11. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:30 PM

    @5 – Do you get randomly punched in the face a lot? For instance, when you are walking down the street and someone walking towards you just lunges fist first at your face.

  12. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:30 PM

    He got 20 years knocked off for good behavior. I guess he managed not to steal anyone’s money while he was in lockup in NYC.

  13. Posted by BSD | July 14, 2009 at 1:31 PM

    Bloomberg reported on this yesterday. It’s standard procedure for the prison bureau, I believe.

  14. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:32 PM

    @bsd link?

  15. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:32 PM

    The justice system is one big Ponzi scheme: Twenty of Madoff’s years were given to another inmate who was incarcerated at an earlier date.

    My guess is that the computer database can’t handle dates beyond 2139 which, for anyone in 2009, is effectively a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

    @20, thanks for the insight…JERK

    -15% for good behavior; if he takes an alcohol rehab course you automatically get another year deducted. 150 x (.15) – 1=126.5
    That would be an approx release date of 2135.

  34. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:55 PM

    bess you are enfatuated with bernie madoff

  35. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:57 PM

    I think his sentence should be commuted to 50 years. It’s only fair.

  36. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 1:59 PM

    @30, @31 yeah…and programmed by the same people who are about to regulate CDS.

    Briefing attorney for a federal district judge here.
    Inmates are entitled to 56 days of good behavior for every year they serve. This is only applicable for sentences over one year. As an asided, most federal judges prefer to give sentences of “a year and a day,” so that good behavior is available.
    Regardless, the Bureau of Prisons factors in the 56 days a year good behavior in the release dates. The only other available mechanism to receive a reduced sentence is to go through drug rehab. This is why you see many white collar criminals announce their drug/alcohol addictions right before sentencing. Since Madoff didn’t go that route, it’s probably unavailable to him.

    @30 Internal Linux dates end January 19, 2038
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2038_problem
    They just switched to 64-bit though, so future versions should be okay.

    @40…too bad most archaic banking software runs on Unix, not Linux. So things are not good. Chances are it’ll be a mad dash to finish this all once again in 2037.

  44. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 4:08 PM

    @43: brain fart — meant the Unix OS, not just the Linux kernel.

  45. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 4:30 PM

    Tool @43 got any contracts out to 30 years? No doubt you’ll be seeing problems right now.
    just sayin’

  46. Posted by EvilBuzzard | July 14, 2009 at 4:51 PM

    Maybe they can freeze Madoff like Simon Phoenix. Then, you know, this might even make a difference.

  47. Posted by guest | July 14, 2009 at 5:00 PM

    There’s no parole in the federal system.
    The BoP computer system caps all terms at 2139. This is a non-issue.
