Department of Housing and Urban Development Is Calling A Real-Estate Bottom

westche.jpgThat's the most obvious interpretation of the news that Westchester Country ($116,916 median household income to a New York and United States average of $51,001 and $61,117 according to the 2000 census) agreed to build a slew of "affordable housing" in a settlement with the Department of Justice and HUD over Westchester's supposed failure to enforce fair housing laws.

The Wall Street Journal is calling it a shot across the bow of other counties (they mean the wealthy ones though) and in particular jurisdictions growing fat (or just barely failing to starve) off government teats.

There's no reason at all, when you think about it, that you shouldn't be able to move into your new place in Scarsdale right after for filing for unemployment.

But Mr. Sims said the lawsuit had made clear that "there was a significant amount of racial segregation" in Westchester. He said studies showed that zip codes could increasingly serve as a predictor of life expectancy and illness. "It's time to remove zip codes as a factor in the quality of life in America," he said.

Indeed.

@1

Bess returns on Thursday, why is your calculator counting down to Monday the 17th? Please tell me you are NOT in finance.

Can someone set a countdown for the last EP post? I'm estimating about 29 hours.

Completely unrelated to all of this other shit, but holy hell that blonde baking chick on CNBC this morning was hot.

Something tells me the Southern portion of New York state will be waving red flags the next go-around.

By the way, I think my Eastern European blood would do well in making Madrid more "diverse." If any house members are reading this, please contact me with flight and housing information.

I wouldn't trade my dead end job for your dead end job.

@12, with comebacks like that, you're destined to take over for Bambi

14

@9 how about some details on what they discussed...you want me to spend an hour to listen to a PODCAST without knowing what it is about?

15

@14 - you know you can scroll through podcasts....retard.

In light of the dearth of substantive content on DB during Bess' vacation, I've decided to post interesting facts about Charlie Gasparino periodically to tide you all over.

INTERESTING CG FACT #1: While usually a euphemism for sex, "hide the salami" was an actual game CG played during his childhood in Queens.

Westchester sucks ass. As someone that lived there for 6 years the place can't burn down fast enough.

@17, agreed. Sadly, Fairfield county is getting ruined by New Yorkers moving here.

19

Where did you get your income data? 2007:
Westchester - $77,097
New York State - $53,448
US - $50,740

@18 Thankfully I don't live in lower Fairfield, however, I feel your pain ...

21

And since when is free market value of homes in an area "unfair"? Isn't that as fair as it gets?

22

Posted by guest , Aug 11, 2009 11:53AM

@19

But didn't you notice? Her data is for Westchester COUNTRY, not county. Gotcha again! (Also note she was comparing US and NY averages with the median in that country.)

Oh yeah, building some "affordable housing" (read: housing project) next to a horse farm in Bedford is going to improve the quality of life for all! There's nothing more that thousands of Puerto Ricans would like than to have easy access to fine horse jumping facilities, J Crew, sushi... and that's coming from a Latino. Look: forcing white people to integrate with non white people is goddam ridiculous. Fairness to good services is a completely separate issue. How many of you poor white trash people are really pissed off that the city hasn't done its part to build its share of trailer parks in Queens for you create your own little white guetto in?

26

Yes, 22 min. to GCT express, 33% Ivy grad rate via Scarsdale High, and non-bubble real estate is easy to hate....

And capes from $750K or Estates at $10 Million are to be had....and its Tischs, Peltz and Icahns in there...not snot nosed hedge kids and russian ganagsters.

"'It's time to remove zip codes as a factor in the quality of life in America,' he said."

Fine, if zip codes no longer correlate very well to income then we'll just go back to the gold standard of using INCOME as the main factor of quality of life. No big change, except that now we'll have lower-middle class families who feel ashamed to be of their status in Westchester and upper-middle class families who don't want them there. Everyone loses. Simply fantastic.

#17...ah yes, the classic nouveau-Westchester resident...who bought the starter mcmansion after his mousy/nose-job wife read about it in some famous book or Forbes list.

And then they moved in and were bitch slapped by people who actually grew up there or are 2nd-5th generation. So she got bitch slapped at Tennis class and he got no respect as a VP.

Naturally, he had no clue and bought on some P.0. box, zip code, mailing address labeling scam saying it was "Westchester" or "Westchester Hills, Estates or Proper" and was in reality Yonkers.

Good luck in CT...with the rest of the trailer trash I see on New Haven line when I get my Ferrari serviced.

They just want a better and more ripe area to rob us. Thats what they mean by "fruits of an established neighborhood"

@29 they service HO scale ferraris at howard's hobby? nice.

32

Fucking lefties and their social engineering, these people would be thrilled if every neighborhood was as shitty as their own.

@29, I just saw your mom servicing a homeless guy on the New Haven line.

@29 - because Ferraris are the mark of old money...

Props if its a classic GT California, but otherwise its just a nouveau riche dick on wheels. Might as well buy a lambo.

right why shouldnt we try actively to destroy what is left of people's property value just in the name of taking them down a peg or two.
