AQR has started hiring big time. They have hired a hoard of useless green PhDs recently and are looking for more. Morale of the non-PhD crowd, which is doing most of the grunt work when PhDs are polishing their nails in front of partners, is pretty low. I expect a major churn out in February, after the pay day.

they pay bottom dollars for PhDs like slightly above second yr banking analysts and use that to dress up marketing books for investors.
Our returns suck! but look at all these new PhDs we hired!
They're actually having a good year as all the horrible bets they made last year bounce back a little. up about 20% or so. But they would need this every year for about 6 years before getting back to HWM

When you all were busy posting on DB from your office terminals he was sitting in Hurst's office adding your name to the canning list..His strategy made a few millions after losing zillions over last few year, he deserves the raise for turning for the turnaround..

The business is moving towards a model where at the top sits laterally hired partners( for all the value they bring), then comes PhDs and at the bottom sits super smart MIT grads cranking the buttons and writing/rewriting production code in cobra, python, coffee, tea, java.. 53, I once saw ooi in liew's office with hurst. hurst and ooi were engaged in a 69 on liew's desk while liew was giving it to ooi in his backside. this was the day before his VP announcement was made.
ooi deserves the respect for being short commodities for about 24 months before making a killing in late 2008. he was just setting the stage for a trade of the century. so what if he lost about $200 million net. he eventually got the view right in the end.
AQR is a long term investor. Biff only check PL once every 3 minutes.

The analysts are unwanted fat of the AQR past. The company is going in a different and better direction. The founding partners have been extraordinarily generous to keep you guys around and to pay out good bonus last year when they had no reason to.
If you think you can go somewhere better, please do so soon. We would be better off without you.
