So! Firms are starting to hire again, which is very exciting to those of you trying to improve your situation. Perhaps it’s been a while since a lot have gone through this process, and you’re a little rusty on the Do’s and Dont’s. Which why starting today we’ll be offering little pearls of accumulated wisdom picked up in the field. Tip one: don’t lie about having received an offer from one firm while you’re interviewing with another. Tip one-A: if you’re going to lie about said fake offer, impersonate someone and forge a little evidence: easy on the typos. Spelling Bank of America without ‘c’ is going to be a red flag. Jeffrey Chiang knows what we’re talking about.
Chiang apparently interviewed at Bank of America, where he was asked if he had any offers from other firms. Jeffrey claimed that he was in his second round of interviews with Morgan Stanley. An associate at BofA then contacted his friend at Morgan about Jeffrey’s prospects. The Morgan guy said that contrary to popular belief, JC had only had a phone interview, at which time he claimed to have gotten a full-out offer from BofA. As proof, JC provided a fabricated email allegedly from a recruiting woman at Bank of America, who would probably be surprised to be informed she’d offered Chiang a job (and that she didn’t know how to spell “America”). The Morgan people forwarded the faux letter of employment back to the people at Bank of America who were doing recon and from there it was forwarded to the entire free world.
Obviously, the lies here are not good form but what’s most upsetting is the lack of effort. There wasn’t an ounce of creativity or dancing in this scam (though we did appreciate the demand to be put up at the Four Seasons). In fact, it’s downright boring, as scams go. It doesn’t come close to a Vayner move, and yet Mr. Chiang has been relegated to the same status as one of the greats. (A list of firms JC will likely not be getting offers from, as gleaned from the outrage expressed by their employees, can be found below). Apparently, though, we now live in a world of diminished expectations where you don’t even need a video or a claim to bench press 500 lbs to rile people up or swear they’ll never offer you a job. Going forward, you’ve been warned.

I interviewed him on campus, and while he was pretty weird/intense, he
seemed like somebody who would crank and potentially make for a good
analyst, so we waved him in for an office visit.
Things started going bad for him when I got a call from our HR
department about him during our Superday. In making his travel
arrangements with our travel agent, he had apparently made a big stink
about needing to stay at the Four Seasons and blow up on the travel
person. It was apparently bad enough that she went to the trouble to
inform our HR department.
Our Superday reviews on him were pretty mixed, nonetheless. He had
spent a summer at Gulfstar, so I did a bit of checking on him there,
and it became clear that they were also very unimpressed with the way
that he carried himself. So, we dinged him, but that is not where the
story ends.
He had told one of the associates in our office that he was in the
second round of interviews for MS’s Palo Alto office. Well, our
associate happened to mention this to his friend that works in the MS
Palo Alto office and the associate at MS said that Jeff had had only
had a phone interview but had indicated that he had an offer from
BAML. When the MS team asked him to send proof of his offer, he
manufactured the email below and forwarded to the MS team.
We have notified UT of this joker’s behavior, but needless to say,
this guy shouldn’t be able to get a job at McDonalds after a stunt
like this.

“So during winter 2007-2008, Merrill Lynch has a four week long internship.
It invites five interns. They shall go unnamed except for Jeffrey Chiang. Jeffrey Chiang is a student at the University of Texas at Austin and formerly interned at Goldman Sachs. *I am not one of the interns*. I have no proof of this, and all I have is my word.
Internship: cold calls, generate sales lead. A large part of the internship included cold calling and selling some of ML’s products to them. This selling part also included getting their email for newsletters.

Well, what about bounceback (when an email is sent and returned because the address does not exist?). Well.. Jeffrey Chiang, although unethical, is quite smart. He pressured the person typing the emails in not to type his.
Basically, everyday when Jeffrey Chiang turned in his sheets containing emails, none of the emails were typed in, but to the supervisors, it appeared as if Jeffrey was contributing.
It gets even better. When Jeffrey Chiang’s practices were finally uncovered, a quick call to all the interns and database check showed he was guilty. Nonetheless, he vehemently denied his actions. Even though he blatantly admitted them to the other interns.
The next day, Jeffrey attempted to bribe one of the interns to keep his mouth shut. $20 for not saying anything. I think the look on the intern’s face summarized the intern’s reply.
Today, Friday, is the last day of the internship. Several are still there. I, obviously, am not. I have decided to let the world know, that Jeffrey Chiang is scum.

In 2008 the C league champions were the Taiwaneses Islanders Students Association and the Filipino Students Association in the two different C Leagues available for basketball.

HR departments at competing firms are not supposed to discuss candidates. I have a few friends who were fired from current jobs because their bosses “somehow” found out that they had been interviewing. We now have proof of this action. There shouldn’t be blackball status. If MS or BAML wanted to get the word out on this kid, they could have issued a press release. At the least, they could ask if he was given an offer, and recieved a yes and no reply. The recruiter knew already that he had not recieved an offer, showing that they talk about almost all candidates.
I recieved the original email string and am happy to post the names/emails of the BAML, MS, LEHMAN, UBS employees who spread this around saying thinks like “don’t hire him.”

By sharing private information and making a collective decision (aparently this is differnt than collusion somehow), they are violating anti trust laws (criminal suit). Additionally, you interview under the guise of anonymity, which has obviously been violated. (civil suit). When I interview, I expect that the company I’m interviewing with will not be contacting other companies about my success or failure. That’s a given. If I interview at MS, and they find out GS didn’t take me, and then “ding” me for that reason, there is an issue

There is a LEGAL blackball status for anyone in the business licensed with FINRA. It’s called a U5 filing. The cost of the removal process for most “dinged” employees who are more junior in their careers, is more than the benefit of finding a new job in the industry.
Plus with banks in NY and other states protected with the same rights as politicians against defamation (ie. absolute priviledge from defamation of character action) their risk in blackballing someone goes only as far as the cost of the arbitration process and legal fees (maybe $100k all-in).

See that could be grounds for a lawsuit if you had a good enough lawyer. The HR person at BofA/ML thought it seemed suspicious and therefore checked through a friend to see if it was true. Through a basic fact-check they found out he was playing one off the other and was lying the whole time. Pointing out fraud isn’t actionable or illegal, and more importantly, what are his damages? You can’t claim lost wages because he wouldn’t be hired in the first place. Because he was committing fraud.
Moreover, what assumption or right to privacy do you have over going in for an interview? As long as they weren’t discussing specific answers given in the interview that could be deemed private in some way, there’s little ground for any kind of claim. Saying he has grounds for a lawsuit in this instance is like saying someone who wasn’t hired based on a background check has grounds for a lawsuit.

The only thing he truly controls in his life is the decision over what analysts/associates he’s going to recommend after Super-Saturday. Aside from driving that leased Porsche in his baseball cap and shades on weekends, nothing gives him more pleasure than blackballing some kid he thinks isnt “investment banker material” like him……

This guys is the perfect banker. Being on the buy side, I’m constantly catching them in their lies and they constantly try to push deals while hiding the information that would make you hesitate to invest in a deal. A good analyst can stop a lying banker/slanted pitchbook a mile away. I wonder if these bankers who found out were once on the buyside.

Let’s take this for what its worth. A couple of comments:
(1) Jeffrey lied about a job offer and because they asked for proof he went further down this path and got caught. He lied. That being said, if we were are saints in this world, we would be in a place to write 300 comments telling him to kill himself. The reality is that we aren’t; at some point throughout everybody’s careers, mistakes in judgement are made and they are held responsible for the conquences. Normally, people get a slap on the wrist, and you make sure never to make the same mistake again. In this kid’s situation, he made a mistake and will likely suffer for it for the next 5-10 years. That really sucks.
(2) That being said, these comments about ‘killing yourself’ or whatever, really need to stop. Think about this 21 year old kid who was so pressured to succeed that he would sacrifice his ethics; truth is, this kid is probobly actually thinking about killing himself at this point. Your ‘funny jokes’ could be thought of as just as unethical, if not more unethical, as the judgement Jeffrey made.
(3) This should really be taken as a lesson to Undergraduate business schools. This kid is a product of his surroundings and education; I would venture to guess that the McCombs school has a culture that would promote this type of behavior and that other business schools are similar. A serious re-evulaiton should be made in their curriculams such that this type of behavior isn’t promoted.

I hired a guy from MIT for an entry level job who claimed to have a 4.5/5 GPA. Don’t get me wrong the guy was bright but not what is GPA showed. So I called him out. On day 1 bring in your transcript. Lo and behold he brings it in and he got a 3.5/5. I fired him on the spot. The sad part was I would have hired him anyway.
Yes I know Wall Street has a reputation of being a haven for a bunch of amoral crooks but the reality is something different. I find compared to a lot of people I deal with in other walks of life we’re not so bad.

I re-read the “warning email” from the BofA analyst to other analysts on the street and I call total bs for the following reasons:
-Ummm….Lehman Brothers was one of the banks that this analyst emailed?? That is an automatic tip off that this email is fake.
-”He had spent a summer at Gulfstar, so I did a bit of checking on him there” — no IB analyst has time to voluntarily run what essentially is a post-offer background check on a candidate that they were planning to ding anyways. I wouldn’t even do this for an interviewee at my firm unless we were planning to hire him and I was specifically asked to run a background check after he received an offer letter.
-”our associate happened to mention this to his friend that works in the MS Palo Alto office and the associate at MS said that Jeff had had only had a phone interview” — what a coincidence that his BofA co-worker in NY happened to be friends with the exact MS analyst in Palo Alto who conducted the phone interview. Either that or everyone in that office evesdrops on everyone else’s phone conversations. I work in an office that I am sure is much smaller than MS’s and I have no clue who even the person sitting next to me is talking to on the phone.
