Screen shot 2009-10-01 at 10.46.45 AM.pngAre you out of job? Homeless? If you haven’t checked your email yet this morning, please allow me to disseminate some incredible news. Michael Moore is here to help. How? Movie night! Oh, that’s right. You might not have a paycheck or a place to live but tonight lady luck enters your universe. Moore is offering free admission to his new movie. For those who haven’t been keeping up, the flick is all about how the Ponzi scheme that is capitalism screwed you, and the reason you’re in your current predicament (it’s a rom-com). While you’ll have to pay for your own popcorn and snacks (this ain’t no free for all), you should allow your mouth to remain agape a little while longer, in awe of such generosity. Would Goldman Sachs ever do anything like this* for you? That’s what I thought.

Subject: Free Screenings Tonight of “Capitalism” for the Jobless and Homeless in America’s Hardest Hit Cities (plus local benefit premieres all across the country)
Friends,
We’re just one day away from the widest opening I’ve ever had for any of my movies. Tomorrow, Friday, October 2nd, “Capitalism: A Love Story” opens on over a thousand screens across the United States, a record for an independent documentary.
This follows last weekend’s limited opening in New York and L.A. where “Capitalism” set the box office record for the highest per screen average of ANY movie released so far this year. Not just any documentary — any MOVIE! It was, as the studio said, a good indicator of just how well the movie may do when it goes wide this weekend. I sincerely hope they’re right because I believe deeply in this film.
To kick off the national release of “Capitalism: A Love Story,” I’ve asked the studio to offer a number of screenings in the nation’s hardest hit cities — the ones with the highest unemployment rates and highest foreclosure rates — where those who’ve lost their jobs or who are in foreclosure (or have already been evicted) may attend my film free of charge. They’ve agreed, and so tonight (Thursday), the night before our opening day, ten cities will grant you free admission if you have fallen on hard times. The list of theaters and cities is below. You don’t need to bring any “proof” of your situation — just show up — it’s the honor system, no questions asked.

*The best LB has ever done is deeply discounted tickets to watch slides of his youth.

Of course, a free movie ain’t much when what you really need is a job or a place to live. And that’s not going to change until the party that controls both the Congress and the White House wakes up and realizes the American people put them in charge to fix the mess created by the previous administration. For that to happen requires the active involvement of each of us. And, as I show in this movie, it’s going to also require us to challenge some fundamental assumptions about an economic system that currently allows the wealthiest ONE PERCENT in this country to have more financial wealth than the bottom 95% combined. That concentration of money and power in the hands of so few people is, I believe, at the core of so many of our problems.
So, if you’re going through tough times and you live in one of the areas below, please be my guest tonight, on the eve of my new film’s opening. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis.
Also, in another five cities tonight, I have made the film available to local groups to hold benefit screenings to raise money for their local organizations — organizations which are working toward a day when a filmmaker doesn’t have to offer free screenings to people who’ve been put through the wringer. If you live in any of these areas (see below for the list of benefit premieres tonight), please come out and support the good work of these grassroots groups.
So, until tomorrow, thanks for your support, and I’ll see ya at the movies!
Yours,
Michael Moore

“will grant you free admission if you have fallen on hard times.”
I guess I am in, my bonus last year was subpar. I was forced to downsize from a Patek Philippe to a Hublot. Goddamn economy.

I love when he yells at the stock exchange.

I think he should be giving the proceeds from this movie to those hardest hit. As he makes up part of the top 1%, he ought to be doing his part to redistribute that wealth.

A P.O. Box and a blackberry/ iPhone will get you access to email without a home. But nice try.

If Michael Moore wanted help the homeless, he could give away some used clothing. The typical suffering homeless people I saw while I lived in LA could have used a pair of Mikey’s BVDs as a tent.

  33. Posted by Tax Chick | October 1, 2009 at 12:14 PM

    @30/13
Why are the homeless less entitled to a cellphone? And just because they are homeless doesn’t mean they live in the park. In fact, NYC park service won’t let people sleep in the park (it closes from dusk to dawn). Lastly, folks living in SROs and shelters are deemed homeless, but have access to mail service and electrical outlets.
Just tired of small-minded folks such as MM, who gets my panties in a knot. Can’t help it.

Anybody get the new Mariah Carey?

  35. Posted by guest | October 1, 2009 at 12:42 PM

    @TC: 13/30 here.
I view a cell phone as a luxury, not a necessity. I view food, water, clothing and shelter as necessities.
If someone cannot afford a place to live and they do not have a job, then they should not spend the few dollars that they have on a luxury item like a cell phone. They should spend their money on life’s necessities, not its luxuries.
If you wanted to justify having a pre-paid phone in case a potential employer called you, then I would be fine with it. But I don’t see why they would need a data plan and a monthly phone plan when they have better things to spend their money on.
When I lived in NYC, I would volunteer for the Coalition for the Homeless from time to time. We made stops inside of the park. The city can say whatever they want; I have seen people come out of the park like the night of the living dead.
That said, I too hate MM.

@28 I’m developing an index for rock. The goal is to sell it to pension funds as an unemployment hedge, and stuctured products around it to addicts for cost management. There’s no competition, so the bid/ask is incredible. Next up is a meth index for the same purpose, which will also open up correlation trading. Guess who I’ve lined up to head that desk…

  37. Posted by guest | October 1, 2009 at 12:47 PM

    Elitist shitholes:
If you ask him to donate the proceeds, do the same. Bet you’re not. (Neither am I, but I’m not sayin’.)
I dunno if he has a point or not, but being an ass with straw man arguments helps no one.
We’ve got a situation. You’re not helping. Neither are $300MM golden parachutes for CEOs bankrupting ther companies, High Freq trading, or politicians who lie about stuff hat actually mattters.
So get a useful idea, or STFU.

People are saying he should donate the money b/c he is making it by lampooning others for making money. Seems just a little hypocritical doesn’t it? The “elitist shitholes” aren’t asking the impoverished to give them money for getting up on a stage yelling at others for making money. That is the difference. If you don’t get the difference you may be retarded.

  46. Posted by guest | October 1, 2009 at 1:30 PM

So fail. Moore says “Capitalism” is evil, not Wall Street. So ANY money making venture that is not evenly shared is evil in his eyes.

Idiot@47- Reading comprehension, please. You are talking about the same thing. @45 was referencing a previous post that was aimed at Wall Street but you would agree that Moore is still a capitalist for doing what he’s doing, right? Thus, hypocritical.
-Not 45 but agree with him

  50. Posted by guest | October 1, 2009 at 1:59 PM

@37 here. First, I apologize for insinuating that I do not wholeheartedly support Stuffed Hats. Indeed, some of my best friends wear stuffed hats.
As for the others, I don’t agree that Capitalism is bad… but come on, people. These packages are WAY out of control for FAILING COMPANIES’ CEO’s. These Boards of Directors have to really start working in the shareholders’ interests, which is their JOB, and stop with the “You give me a nice package on THIS board YOU’RE on, and when it comes your turn, I’ll be sure to hook YOU up.
If you do well, reap the rewards. If you fail, then, well, don’t fear the reaper… or maybe you should. It’s what SAVINGS are for. $10M in the bank can get you through the ‘lean’ times, right?
And someone has to point these things out. I don’t know how much he donates, or what causes he supports, but the messenger should only be put into context for his conflicts of interest (which he indeed seems to have), but not denied completely.
Yes, remember he makes $$$ for the film, but listen to the message anyway, and think about what he says. Then look further if it strikes your fancy.

  51. Posted by TGNC | October 1, 2009 at 2:19 PM

@37/50 Who would you have Boards accountable to? I hear ACORN has some time on their hands! It is the responsibilies of the shareholders to hold board members accountable. If they shirk their responsibilities “caveat emptor” on them. But take you populist bullshit back to the Daily Kos!
