By now you’ve likely heard the news: you can no longer say that Goldman Sachs is evil, because Lloyd Blankfein and Co. are merely doing the big guy’s bidding. Actually, that’s not true: you can call the Masters of the Universe sinners all you want but do so at your own peril, knowing full well that you’re fucking with The BG. Take this latest profile from the Times Online. You can see God’s hand in the whole thing. Obviously not just in the insistence that Goldman is basically a charitable organization whose first and foremost interest is to serve society but also in the jokes. It’s clear that God and Blankfein were discussing the upcoming story and the BG suggested going with the self-deprecation. “Be overly sarcastic. Take the shit they’ve been saying about us and then advance the joke,” Blankfein’s boss counseled. “Hide what we’re doing in plain sight; make them seem like the crazy ones and you’ll have them up against a wall. There’ll be no arguing.” For example:
The talk that inside 85 Broad, the MoTU plot to bring modern society to its knees.
“Aha! You catch us plotting in real time,” says Lloyd Blankfein, breaking away from a cabal of senior executives discussing his trip to Washington the previous day. Blankfein, 55, Goldman’s chairman and chief executive, is wearing a grey suit with a jaunty Hermès tie with little red bicycles on it. In his hand, he’s carrying one of those cups of coffee that look bigger than the human stomach. Maybe it’s the caffeine, maybe it’s the tie — a birthday present from his daughter — but he’s in a remarkably jolly mood for a man everyone seems to hate. “It’s like a safari here,” he jokes. “You’ve come in to look at the animals.”
And that stuff about killing adorable animals, endangered or otherwise, sucking out their essence and using it as a source of power.
Goldman is the biggest user of voicemail in the world. The “mind bullets” consist of anything from the latest profit and loss figures, to reports of what the chief executives of key clients have told Blankfein and his top team over lunch, to instructions to “switch off on holiday, for goodness sake.” No calls to meet in the basement to club baby seals to death first thing in the morning to get in the mood for a hard day’s banking? “God, no,” one staffer says wryly. “We don’t club baby seals. We club babies.”
And the most hilarious “urban legend” of them all.
The idea of teamwork goes right to the top. Goldman may not be a private partnership any more — it went public a decade ago — but the bosses work hard to foster a “we’re in this together”, family-style approach. Others say it feels more like a cult, but they mean it as a compliment. Some of its practices make perfect sense. Bonuses, for example, are not based on personal performance, as they are at many banks, but on the performance of the firm as a whole, and partners receive a sizable chunk of their remuneration in stock that they cannot sell until they leave the firm. It weeds out what Dina Powell, 36, the firecracker Egyptian-American boss of Goldman’s philanthropic arm, calls “egomaniac jerks” who might be tempted to bet the farm on red in the hope of skewering a bigger bonus.

On the 20 or 30 interviews I can concur. I went to work for Goldman as a mid level IT manager in 1999. I had to go on 26 interviews. Everyone had a different role including one dude who wanted to know about my "high school career". Mind you I had over 15 years tech experience under my belt and a BS and MS in Comp Sci. I had to spend an hour with the loser discussing high school! I got the job and couldn't stomach the combination of ignorance and arrogance. I quit in a year. The place is full of egotistical A-Holes who are clearly not the smartest guys in the room.

Posted by guest , Nov 09, 2009 1:20PM
@14 over how long was the interview process? wouldn't that take, what, 6-8 weeks? unless you were coming in every single day?
Posted by ex-GS (pre-crash) , Nov 09, 2009 1:21PM
it's not 30 interviews w/ the SAME person, it's 30 people's opinion of you .. however, what they fail to say is that most of this is for show, esp once an MD or Partner has said to "interview" a certain candidate ... can you say rubber-stamp?
but there is so much to pick at w/ this 7-page Times article ... BL as usual got the highlights but really the interviewer didn't really ask any hard Qs, like how GS actually believes that they "didn't need" the TARP money or to explain how their new charter as a commercial bank has led to cheap funding but no real LENDING of money, per the mandate of non-investment banks??
it's yet another attempt to show "the real" GS but they will never let you see it, just what they want you to see and what suits their needs.
but it just proves what I always knew: much better to be a shareholder of GS than an employee!

Goldman Sachs "Tough" Interview Questions (supposedly from a job coach who has interviewed many people who have gone through the GS hiring process..)
1. When two planes of existance collide, what effect does that have on Reebopulan cargo shipments to planet MNB4532?
2. How few "Bucky Balls" can fit on the head of an AIG risk manager?
3. A Goldman Sach managing Director cuts himself accidentally on a Citi pitchbook. What color of green will ooze from the cut?
4. A GS trader, an AIG trader and a former Lehman trader meet each other on thee street and shake hands. In whose hand will there be gold as a result? Whose hand will have a lead ingot and in whose hand will their be Milk Dud like goat spoor?
5. In Meebian mathematics, rhomboid co-signis fromulates when Earth markets are in turmoil. What is the suare root of a Meebiam prime number exposed to Earth's oxygen.
6. A GS trader starts to gold leaf his scrotum at 11:00pm EST using a steel chalice and a butane blowtorch. Meanwhile , a GS trader in London starts the same procedure at Greenwich Mean Time. Given the coefficient of testicular expansion in Earth's atmosphere, how long in sarctoids will it take to singe hair on both traders testicles?
7. A dangerous viral epidemic is sweeping Earth. Using Brontoidian mind-meld methods, how long must a GS representative stare at a CDC administrator before being handed all the vaccine the firm needs?
8. How many krill would it take to make a 1.0 Richter scale flatulent explosion from a sperm whale?

Okay H1N1 morons... please try to get informed before you start screaming. If you have a problem with the way the vaccines were distributed take a look in the mirror. This is a result of our elected officials, not the corporations who received the vaccines.
NYC has a very well thought out (oxy-moron?) plan for distributing flu vaccines in general. It is a model for the rest of the nation.
From Bloomberg:
New York City received 800,000 doses of vaccine for swine flu, or H1N1 influenza, as of the beginning of the month, department spokeswoman Jessica Scaperotti said. The biggest portion -- 39 percent -- was allocated to the schools, while 21 percent was set aside for health care providers, 19 percent for hospitals, and 6 percent for private adult providers, including large employers with on-site medical personnel and clinics.
City clinics administered thousands of vaccinations this weekend to middle- and high-school age children, while during the week younger children received their shots or sprays at school. It may not be perfect, but the system put in place in New York City appears to be working pretty well. Blaming corporations because New York is running a public health campaign more efficiently than other cities is a bit like blaming the Yankees for having better pitching or stronger bats than their rivals.
You just want to be angry at the banks. Do us a favor and kill yourself.

1,200 vaccines at Citi out of ~25,000 NYC employees = 4.8%
200 vaccines at Goldman out of 10,000 NYC employees = 2%
800k vaccines in all NYC out of 8MM people = 10%
I fail to see some evil conspiracy at work. And I like evil conspiracies!
Plus, you really think some minimum wage earner at CVS is administering the vaccines they received better than GS or Citi? Doubt it!

If 85 Broad is the house of God's work, then word to the warning to them, don't let Jesus come-a-knockin'! We;ve seen this before:
16. The Merchants are Banished from the Temple.
The Jews’ Passover was at hand. Jesus Christ went up to Jerusalem. Upon entering the Temple, He found great disorder. There they sold sheep, bullocks and doves; money changers were sitting at their tables. The lowing of the cattle, the bleating of the sheep, the talking of the people, the quarrels about the prices, the jingle of the coins — all this gave the Temple the semblance of a bazaar rather than the house of God.
Jesus Christ made a whip of small ropes and drove all the traders with their cattle out of the Temple. He overthrew the tables of the money changers and poured out their money. He said to them that sold doves, "Take these things away; make not My Father’s house a house of merchandise." No one dared to disobey Jesus.
Having seen this, the chief Jews of the Temple came in a fury. They approached the Saviour and said, "What sign showest Thou unto us, seeing that Thou doest these things?"

Lloyd is clearly confused about Goldman's role in "God's work". It is obvious that Jesus doesn't agree with Lloyd...
----------------------------------
"As Jesus taught, He said, "Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets!"
"For they devour widows' houses and say long prayers to cover it up. They will receive greater condemnation!"
Mark 12:38-40
----------------------------------
For those who don't recall, "scribes" were those people who had skills with numbers, with markets, with church law, and with writing.
Goldman is certainly skilled at all those things.

Posted by Tax Chick , Nov 09, 2009 2:53PM
@70 thank you for making my point.
All I was saying is that the health clinics at large institutions have the government crawling up their asses monitoring their every move. These firms are very aware of their responsibility given the heighten media scrutiny. Meanwhile, any asshole can walk into a CVS minute clinic and get an H1N1 vaccine without being in a designated high risk group.
If you are outraged at my minimum wage comment, look in the fucking mirror. You are passing judgement on others based on where they are employeed. I fail to see how it is a GS or Citi employee's fault that the government sent their employer the vaccine. Where is the outrage at your precious governmental system? This is the same assholes who are now developing a "national" healthcare system. You think it is is out of wack now?! Good luck when you are getting your meds from the DMV.

@TC - wow, talk about taking my 'self righteous' comment and turning it into a whole political tirade. The point is that there are clinics out there who haven't even been able to give the vaccine to their own healthcare workers who deal with patients, including, children, while large companies get the vaccine to give out as they choose. Every once in a while even wall street apologists have to recognize there's a legitimate gripe. But I sense you're dogmatically opposed to any wall street criticism so I doubt there's any convincing. I think most people would agree however.
Posted by Tax Chick , Nov 09, 2009 3:07PM

So no, I do not believe that GS or Citi or any other of the 27 corporations that received the vaccine should apologize for the errors of the government.
Where is your anger at Time Warner or New York University? They also got the vaccine after they were likewise approved by the CDC. Where is your anger at BO for not declaring this an epidemic sooner so as to clear the red tape encountered by the pharma companies? Where is your anger at the pharma companies for failing to deliver the vaccines they promised?
