Guy Who Helped Build Citi: My Bad

John Reed, who played kind of a big role in cobbling together the world’s largest diversified whorehouse, has something to get off his chest:

“I’m sorry,” Reed, 70, said in an interview yesterday. “These are people I love and care about. You could imagine emotionally it’s not easy to see what’s happened.”

John S. Reed, who helped engineer the merger that created Citigroup Inc., was apologizing for his role in building a company that has taken $45 billion in direct U.S. aid and said banks that big should be divided into separate parts.

Is he really sorry? Or was this just an attempt to get Vikram to hold him close and insist “it’s not your fault” over and over? Unclear (though we wouldn’t fault him if it were the latter). In any event, does anyone else have something they want to apologize for today? Related to Citi or not? Throw it out there. We’re all listening.

I'm sorry John Mack isn't in prison for insider trading where he belongs.

I'm sorry Arthur Sanberg isn't in prison for insider trading where he belongs.

I'm sorry that Dick Fuld, Ken Lewis and Joseph Gregory aren't all in prison for being terminally stupid (sorry, reading the Sorkin book, what a bunch of friggin Jackasses).

I'm sorry that Paulson isn't in jail for lining Goldman's pockets with taxpayer money.

Phew, I now feel better and can begin my weekend blissfully drowning my brain in delicious ice cold brewski.....

Mmmmmmm...

So you have to post his age??? "“I’m sorry,” Reed, 70, said in an interview yesterday." So what if he's 70?? What's age got to do with anything? You aren't a little "age-ist" are you, huh? Didn't all you young runzas kill the global equity markets recently?? When you're 70 you'll be wearing eco-ball caps and shouting at pregnant teenagers at town hall meetings while you're sucking on the social security and medicare tit, you little shitheels. I know your type....I know your type.

He should be.

Contrary to what most think, Sandy Weil was still a slimey queens Jew in the mid 1990s.

He had cobbled together Primerica (a bucket shop), and latched onto Travelers which was technically bankrupt with toxic early 90s real estate assets, and picked up Salomon which was also bankrupt.

He did however, go around saying Travelers was worth hundreds of billions (based on encumbered policy holders insurance surplus and annuity values...that would never be available to shareholders) and most people were idiots to believe it.

It all boiled down to one meeting in a DC hotel room where Sandy bs'd Reed that Greenspan had blessed this idea (in fact geezer had hung up on him).

Travelers was no way equal to Citi's value. In fact, every Travelers unit was sold off for pennies over the years, including Primerica which is doing a $100M IPO 13 yrs later, next week!

Reed who had huge stature back then could have told him to fuck off and merged with Chase, BA, Bankers Trust, or Chemical and been Jamie Dimon today.

Instead he bought Sandy's bull and was gone in 1 yr.

Sandy is the biggest waste, and thank god he lost most of his fortune with Citi.
