Mama Goffer Threatens To Call The Police (Not On Her Sons)

Yesterday was apparently not the first time Emanual Goffer has been accused of wrongdoing in conducting his biz. In 2003 Boston.com outted Emanuel as the owner-operator of a cheat-sheet note system for coeds at Boston University. Goffer’s firm, which he called Beantown Notes, operated out of Boston on Beacon Street. The University’s lawyer sent a cease and desist order to Goffer’s firm, threatening to sue if they didn’t shut it down. Goffer conceded, and moved on to bigger and better things, like (allegedly) trading on material non-public information with his brother, Zvi. Speaking of: Dealbreaker, in an attempt to learn more about Team Goffer, reached out to Dalia Goffer, the boy’s mother yesterday, and asked if she thought the FBI had arrested the wrong guys. In an email sent late last night she responded:

“low life…………….go get yourself a life………………..are u eating your heart…………..u can’t kiss my sons ass hole [sic]…………………..because u so sick in your brain and so low….and if u don’t stop bothering me I will contact the police.”

(We had written: “Dalia - how are you feeling about your sons arrest today. Did the FBI get the wrong boys?”)

While we don’t consider journalist asking questions via email to the mother of two alleged insider traders anything the Long Island police would consider ‘bothersome,’ we assume she’s understandably upset about the charges against her Billy Joel lov’in sons.

Bill Joel Superfan isn't the most clever fella around. His cheat-sheet company was offering $5 per one lecture's notes and $49 for a full semester's worth. Under this scheme, students make more selling the notes individually. It should be the other way. They should earn a few bucks more for an entire semester's worth of notes, rather than per lecture.

He's an idiot that deserves to get fucked in the ass by Bubba.

Maybe we could ask about how they and their children plan to deal with the stigma associated with their last name? That would be so awesome.

@52/54 - To be fair, it's not unreasonable to assume Bess has some control over the site's content....that is typically part of an 'editor's' responsibilities, no?

58

Posted by guest , Nov 06, 2009 6:17PM

@coveredlong-- DB has a managing editor, whose job it would be. not bess's. so, no, that would not be "fair." headless remains a j/off.

59

Posted by HeadlessHorseman , Nov 06, 2009 6:19PM

Bess,

I get that you didn't write it. Does that also imply that you have no voice (however small and inconsequential) in the content of this site? I don't know...I thought that's what "editor" meant.

Let's all have a good laugh at the expense of these assholes' mother. It's even funnier since she's probably doing really well about now. And it's not enought to just laugh at her...let's make sure she knows it. Besides, if anyone deserves it, surely it's the mother.

You've got to be please with the page views though? So I guess in that respect it's worthwhile. Really classy.

60

Posted by Anal_yst , Nov 06, 2009 6:24PM

@Headless

Had you simply pointed out that the mom is probably under alot of stress now and likely doesn't need any more, that'd have been one thing, but you went too far.

When both of your sons get arrested, are dumb enough to have their facebook profiles public, etc, etc, there's some inevitable parental responsibility. Sure, each of us is our own person, and have no doubt made our fair share of mistakes - egregious or not - but don't jump on Bess because Buhl sent what appears to be an simple, inquisitive email to the mother.

Its not like the network news crews tresspassing on peoples' property and incessantly shoving microphones in the greivings' face, not hardly, so stfu, quit your b*tching, and if you don't like it, gtfo.

61

Posted by Bess Levin , Nov 06, 2009 6:26PM

@Headless- your self-righteous shtick consistently bores me, as does your insistence on discussing matters on which you don't have a fucking clue (and, more generally, the whole "I hate this place! You guys suck! I hate the editors! I hate the commenters! But I refuse to stop coming here and saying it!").

I have a managing editor who is the actual "editor" of these sites. I write my posts, and rarely "edit" those of others. "Editor" is a misnomer, as mostly all I do is write (my own stuff). Also, this definitely would not be a "we did it for the pageviews" post. You (think you) know what those are, right? (Hint: breasts.)

And what anal_yst said.

62

Posted by CoveredLong , Nov 06, 2009 6:29PM

@61 - Don't tease us Bresst...uh, Bess.

63

Posted by Tax Chick , Nov 06, 2009 6:35PM

Oh Bess! Now you've done it! "Bess wrote 'breast'" is going to be the spankers dream tonight.

64

Posted by HeadlessHorseman , Nov 06, 2009 6:50PM

@ Anal_yst

Agreed. If anyone has gone too far, clearly it's me.

Provoking an obviously distraught and presumably innocent grandmother regarding her two sons likely going to prison (thereby leaving her grandchildren effectively fatherless) as a means of pandering to a bunch of schadenfreude enthusiasts is right on par. Or perhaps asking the mother “Dalia - how are you feeling about your sons arrest today. Did the FBI get the wrong boys?” is honestly what passes for inquisitive journalism around here? Given the circumstances, and the FBI’s notorious tendency to publicly arrest completely innocent people in conjunction with large sting operations…these seem like a genuine questions need to be answered. And who would know more about a complex insider trading scheme then…wait for it…the accused mother!

Besides, it's apparently to be expected due to the "parental responsibility" that you've invoked. It's practically common knowledge that she was a horrible mother and, as such, is deserving of being further humiliated for our enjoyment.

As for Bess, I wouldn’t have taken issue with her if she wasn’t so quick to offer up a condescending cop out.

65

Posted by guest , Nov 06, 2009 6:52PM

@headless, ah yes but clearly it wasn't a cop-out, as it is the managing editor who's in charge of the contributor's stuff. so, you remain a douchebag.

66

Posted by guest , Nov 06, 2009 6:54PM

@headless-- you calling ANYONE condescending is rich. also, buhl was asking an innocuous question that any journalist might. nothing "provoking" about it. kill yourself already and be done with it.

67

Posted by Tax Chick , Nov 06, 2009 7:04PM

HH - Had Mama Goffer merely said "no comment" or even just ignored the email much as I do when I have been informed that I just won the UK lottery, there would be nothing to discuss here. The majority of comments here are directed at the commentariat. The mother is the direct subject of less than 10 comments. Is your ire really warranted?! Dial it back, buddy.

68

Posted by Anal_yst , Nov 06, 2009 7:19PM

HH, with this whiney nonsense, you've helped me pass the past 30 minutes of my otherwise boring evening stuck at work till god knows when, so for that, I suppose some thanks is in order.

Otherwise mammas boy, you're delusional to take offense to Buhl's email/this post, if that wasn't profoundly clear yet. @Tax Chick said it best, if she didn't want to deal with it, she could have...wait for it...not dealt with it.

Seriously nancy, hike up that skirt and man the f' up already, its NBD, and your crying is starting to get old.

Teri gave this woman an opportunity to defend her two sons, whom we know so far only as suspects in a criminal case. Presumably their mother could give us something humanizing about them, or correct the public record. Or she could have deleted Teri's e-mail (ht TC), as any competent lawyer must have advised her to do. It's not hard.
Rather, she flew off the handle in a spectacular way.
Teri is a reporter. In pursuing and reporting the facts, she did the right thing all along. I'm surprised that an educated and otherwise intelligent person claims to disagree.

Headless, you've really missed the boat on this. If you generally don't like this site's content then give it up and go somewhere where you're comfortable. There are things I read in the comments section I don't always like and I've been torched a few times by comments I've made. But overall the site's journalistic standards are very high, Bess & co. are on top of things, the comments are often wonderfully witty, and it's the most spirited, refreshing site of it's type I've found on the internet.

73

Bess,

How is it my fucking fault for not knowing that BreakingMedia has a thing for inflating job titles? What is this Fashion Meets Finance? In any event, I apologize for not knowing that your job title is more of an “honorary type of thing.” Boy do I feel stupid.

@66

I agree with your first sentence, but disagree with the rest. I suppose such differences of opinion are likely the result of you getting your "news" from TMZ and my preference for The Economist.

Tax Chick,

Sorry. My wife’s on the rag so that means no sensy time for me. Just some misdirected frustration with a dramatic flair.

Anal_yst,

Glad to help. I’ll try to cook up a new routine, but negativity is just so easy. That said, sometimes I even tire of my own writing.

InfiniteGuest,

I doubt that Teri really needed to provide such an “opportunity.” Despite the horrible spelling, I would assume Dalia knows how to use a phone if she had something to say.

TB: “How are you feeling about your sons arrest today?”

Dalia: “It’s really exciting. I’m a big fan of that Law and Order TV series and so I can’t wait to be a part media circus that will likely consume my life in the near term. Do you think I’ll get to be on TV?”

TB: “Did the FBI get the wrong boys”

Dalia: “Well, given my extensive knowledge of the applicable securities laws, and the fact that I have virtually unrestricted access to what my sons do while at work just like most mothers, especially those with sons that work in finance…I can tell you that they’re almost certainly innocent. I’m currently leveraging my encyclopedic knowledge of the trades they were involved in to mount a defense against these preposterous allegations. Must have been two coincidental cases of mistaken identities. Everyone knows how careless the FBI typically is with those big sting operations.

I mean what was Teri expecting?

I also have the mother of all Napoleon complexes, therefore, I am programmed to assume that anything that anyone else could be doing or saying is "stupid, gay or pathetic". This is my way of rejecting outsiders before they can reject me and/or make fun of the fact that I am 5'3 and shop at Express Too.
