Obviously this does not come from NYU professor Nouriel Roubini, who’d never hold his students to such freaky ass rules. It, along with a bunch of other rules for “tomorrow’s business leaders,” is courtesy of Professor Scott Galloway, precipitated by a student who dared to walk into his class several minutes late. In case anyone was wondering if that, or pissing on the desk was okay, here’s your answer.

Subject: Brand Strategy Feedback

Prof. Galloway,

I would like to discuss a matter with you that bothered me. Yesterday evening I entered your 6pm Brand Strategy class approximately 1 hour late. As I entered the room, you quickly dismissed me, saying that I would need to leave and come back to the next class. After speaking with several students who are taking your class, they explained that you have a policy stating that students who arrive more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted to class.

As of yesterday evening, I was interested in three different Monday night classes that all occurred simultaneously. In order to decide which class to select, my plan for the evening was to sample all three and see which one I like most. Since I had never taken your class, I was unaware of your class policy. I was disappointed that you dismissed me from class considering (1) there is no way I could have been aware of your policy and (2) considering that it was the first day of evening classes and I arrived 1 hour late (not a few minutes), it was more probable that my tardiness was due to my desire to sample different classes rather than sheer complacency.

I have already registered for another class but I just wanted to be open and provide my opinion on the matter.
Regards,
xxxx

xxxx:
Thanks for the feedback. I, too, would like to offer some feedback.
Just so I’ve got this straight…you started in one class, left 15-20 minutes into it (stood up, walked out mid-lecture), went to another class (walked in 20 minutes late), left that class (again, presumably, in the middle of the lecture), and then came to my class. At that point (walking in an hour late) I asked you to come to the next class which “bothered” you.
Correct?
You state that, having not taken my class, it would be impossible to know our policy of not allowing people to walk in an hour late. Most risk analysis offers that in the face of substantial uncertainty, you opt for the more conservative path or hedge your bet (e.g., do not show up an hour late until you know the professor has an explicit policy for tolerating disrespectful behavior, check with the TA before class, etc.). I hope the lottery winner that is your recently crowned Monday evening Professor is teaching Judgement and Decision Making or Critical Thinking.
In addition, your logic effectively means you cannot be held accountable for any code of conduct before taking a class. For the record, we also have no stated policy against bursting into show tunes in the middle of class, urinating on desks or taking that revolutionary hair removal system for a spin. However, xxxx, there is a baseline level of decorum (i.e., manners) that we expect of grown men and women who the admissions department have deemed tomorrow’s business leaders.
xxxx, let me be more serious for a moment. I do not know you, will not know you and have no real affinity or animosity for you. You are an anonymous student who is now regretting the send button on his laptop. It’s with this context I hope you register pause…REAL pause xxxx and take to heart what I am about to tell you:
xxxx, get your shit together.
Getting a good job, working long hours, keeping your skills relevant, navigating the politics of an organization, finding a live/work balance…these are all really hard, xxxx. In contrast, respecting institutions, having manners, demonstrating a level of humility…these are all (relatively) easy. Get the easy stuff right xxxx. In and of themselves they will not make you successful. However, not possessing them will hold you back and you will not achieve your potential which, by virtue of you being admitted to Stern, you must have in spades. It’s not too late xxxx…
Again, thanks for the feedback.

@4/PJ They have no stated policy, but when your class is run by a Snatch-Buckling Muffkateer, one of the original Vagilantes, the Trim Reaper himself, one must assume that sort of behavior is tacitly endorsed if not strongly encouraged.

Jokes aside, the professor is making a valuable point to this kid. He may be bright enough to get into the MBA program, but he lacks a basic level of decorum that is necessary to function in the financial world. And if you’re of the type to side with the MBA student, then you should look in the mirror and admit you’re a jackass. If anyone in finance walked into a meeting an hour late because they were “sampling” other jobs/meetings, they would be fired. You are not a special and unique snowflake, so grow up or get in the unemployment line.

  21. Posted by Anal_yst | February 22, 2010 at 4:24 PM

This kid shoulda shown some cajones and told Galloway to take his f*cking Ritalin so he doesn’t get distracted by a door opening/closing. Man the f*ck up, kid, if you wanna get anywhere in this world.

@20 Let me add something else. Why didnt this dipshit just get the syllabus from another student after the class?
Skim it see how many tests, papers there will be, if anything interesting pops out ect. You NEVER get any interesting insights listening to a lecture on the first day, but the syllabus is the window to a professors soul, or lack thereof.

I wouldn’t cross Prof. Galloway’s path until graduation if I were this unfortunate soul.

I think the professor is in the wrong, not only by kicking the student out but also by sending this ridiculous e-mail. Students are allowed to audit and sample. I give the MBA candidate credit for writing back to the guy and relaying his thoughts respectfully.

@25 (&26) – I find that line works really with cops and people at the IRS, too. In fact, darn near everyone in a position of regulatory (or other) authority over me who’s salary is indirectly paid by me appreciates the occasional reminder of the true source of their power and of their stature.

  42. Posted by Novice | February 22, 2010 at 6:28 PM

    @Anal,
The question is whether Galloway will smirk proudly at that best-defense-is-a-good-offense, or just explode. Were I the professor I’d be proud of the little prick growing some spine rather than the dickless wonder pondering why he can’t come in mid-lecture, but ymmv.

  43. Posted by Anal_yst | February 22, 2010 at 6:29 PM

So pardon my naivete, but this kid hadn’t scheduled his classes before the semester started? Is this standard practice?

  44. Posted by guest | February 22, 2010 at 6:34 PM

@41 No one cares, since McCombs’ only two requirements for acceptance are: 1) breath, 2) a pulse. Stern is actually a respected school outside of its own state. So, keep these observations to yourself.

  48. Posted by guest | February 22, 2010 at 7:21 PM

There are so many things wrong with both of those emails, but the only one who really benefits is Galloway. He considers himself a marketing genius, and this exposure is just another way for him to boost his ego. Its interesting that Galloway’s email violated a number of “easy” things, such as “respecting institutions (Stern), having manners, demonstrating a level of humility.”

@44- McCombs might not be the Stern of business schools, but atleast it is not entrenched with douchebags, pompous asses, and members of the LSC (Lucky Sperm Club). I’ll take the product of a respectable public school before I’d take a competent jerkoff from a private. Not to say that everyone from privates are like this, but it is definitely more evident.

I disagree unequivocally with the professor, his assumptions about the “real world,” and his entirely subjective definitions of etiquette which he uses as a defense for his own power and privilege. Not only does his stance refuse the notion that both society and education can be transformative, he has no business being in any classroom in a democratic society
