Many women report that sexism is still rife on Wall Street, albeit less overt. Sexual discrimination charges by women at finance companies dropped 28% from 2000 to 2009, according to data from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. But the number of charges per woman in the industry climbed during the recession in 2008 and 2009. Monica Murphy…an entrepreneur who worked at Goldman for six years, said the social aspect of the job was awkward. “I always was invited out, as were the other younger women, but oftentimes you didn’t want to go,” she said. “It was a strange thing to be 24 and to be going to drinks with 45-year-old men.” Muntean said that many of her female coworkers got smaller bonuses because they didn’t golf or pal around with male managing directors. “There were a couple that tried to be buddy-buddy with the guys, but it never really worked,” she said. “It wasn’t like the ’60s, getting slapped on the butt all the time. That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Sexism? Really? I’m a guy in my 20′s and get asked to drinks with my team (which is mostly 40 something senior guys) all the time. And yes, there is pressure to go. It’s not fucking sexual pressure, it’s social pressure. It’s the prudent, career-oriented thing to do. Finance is a social game, and these are the things you do when you’re trying to advance your career. Sometimes you put on a smile and have drinks with the boys.
Oh you got a shitty bonus? Was it directly because you didn’t attend happy hour drinks with everyone else in the office? Or was it because nobody really ever saw you as part of the team as a result of your overly sensitive bullshit? Guess what ladies, not everyone is trying to sleep with you all the time. Get rid of that fucking chip on your vagina and step up to the plate – you’re only keeping yourselves down. Have you ever considered that the “very subtle” sexism is all in your head?
So, now they’re not getting slapped on the ass and it’s discrimination because they feel ‘excluded’. Can’t win.
