Robert G. Burton is the chairman and CEO of Greenwich-based Burton Capital Management. Over the years he’s donated more than $7 million to the school’s football program, including a $2.5 million gift for the Burton Family Football Complex. Now Burton wants that money back and his name taken off the building. He’s extremely miffed and in a letter to athletic director Jeff Hathaway– the object of Burton’s ire– he outlined why.

1. Burton blames Hathaway- who he says is “not qualified to be a Division I AD”– for the departure of former coach Randy Edsall, who took a gig with Maryland after leading the UConn to its first-ever BCS bowl. “Randy took another job because he couldn’t work with you,” Burton fumes. Personally, he writes, “I would have fired you a long time ago.”

2. Burton wanted to be “kept in the loop” on the process of finding Edsall’s replacement, because he could “provide insight about potential candidates.” He was not kept in the loop and the school went ahead and hired former Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni without even asking Burton first.

3. If they had Burton would’ve told them not to hire the guy. Not that this has anything to do with anything but…

Burton’s son Joe played for Pasqualoni at Syracuse from 1997 through 2001. There was a conflict between Bob Burton and Pasqualoni when his son played there, a source briefed on their relationship told Schad.

Burton “wasn’t asking for veto power,” he just wanted to feel like his voice was being heard. Since it wasn’t, he feels the message being sent is that he’s not be “respected” or having his opinion “valued.” Give his money and his name back now and nobody gets hurt. He’s found a more appreciation from the University of Bridgeport’s women’s volleyball team, who will now be the lucky recipients of his largesse.

Mr. Burton also noted that the campus was starting to be “more colorful” than he would prefer, but also demanded the AD recruit more speed.

Especially considering TCU will be in the Big East. Former Syracuse football coach gives UConn little chance of getting to another bowl game. Rich Rodriguez is available; at least he made West VA a legitimate contender.

Unfortunately for Burton, the UCONN Endowmwnt utilizes the same lawyers as Harbinger and his donation is now subject to a perpetual lock-up with a 20% gate thereafter. And although the Endowment is tax exempt, the CIO and other top executives may use donations to pay personal income taxes at their discretion.

Mr. Burton, I see a bit of myself in you, literally. I like thinking big. I always have. If you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big. I want to introduce you to a couple of my close personal friends from professional sports that I think you can really identify with because they, like you, have each refused to listen to criticism in their quest for sporting greatness. The first is Rod Tidwell, one of the greatest receivers to ever go across the middle for the Arizona Cardinals. The next is Kenny Powers one of the most outstanding fastball pitchers to ever take the mound. And finally, from the sport I own, Roy McAvoy, who despite being a severe underdog, went on to shoot one of the lowest rounds in a Major. I know all three of these outstanding athletes personally and believe that they may have insights that can help you with your issues at UCONN.

Apparently, Mr. Burton does not know the meaning of donation. He must feel that donation really means chokehold. Shame on him. If he donated to an organization like, say, Save the Children, do you think he would want them as his personal slaves.

Read the letter–linked above by Sss. He plans on donating the money to another program. This guy really likes football and claims to have been an NFL draft pick and to have worked with the Vikings on draft picks while a grad student.

He is not exactly the tool BL tried to make him out to be. It appears he and his family have been very generous in their donations to a University that he did not attend, although his son did.
