Yesterday afternoon, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced that it had frozen the assets of “purported” Boston-based quant named Andrey C. Hicks. Purported because, was he actually a quant? Not so much! Other small inaccuracies in his story with which the regulator took issue, describing the total as Hicks’ “brazen web of lies”:

* The claim that Hicks received his Ph.D in Applied Mathematics from Harvard in two years (2005-2007). This is a thing that did not happen, most likely on account of the fact that Hicks, who also claimed he received an undergraduate degree from Harvard in 2005, after having earned a grade point average of 4.0, natch, was asked to leave the school after three semesters, during which he took one math course, in which he received a D-.

* The claim that he took a job at Barclays Capital after graduating, where he, in just over a year, he “grew his book nearly two-fold and expanded his group’s assets under management to roughly $16 billion.” (For its part, BarCap says they’ve never heard of the guy.)

* The claim that following his time at Barclays, he decided to apply “quantitative strategies based on mathematical models he developed at Harvard” (i.e. the place his math skills didn’t exactly shine) at a shop of his founding, Locust Offshore Management LLC

* The claim that Ernst & Young was the fund’s auditor, while Credit Suisse served as its prime broker and custodian (like Barclays, neither E&Y nor Credit Suisse have ever heard of Hicks)

* The claim that Locust’s assets under management clocked in at approximately $1.2 billion. In fact, they were more in the ballpark of $1.7 million.

In related news, it appears that Kim Kardashian, who Hicks seems to know through her husband, dodged a bullet on this one.

You got it, mixed race Minneapolis born & bred. I went through his tweets and he seems to have been the instigator in all the contact amongst the Kardashians and Humphries' families. Only Kaela Humphries ever responded and doesn't even follow him.

His Google+ account in nearly empty and none of the people he tweets are in his circles. High school friend or name dropping relative? Interesting.

He also swears he dated natalie portman. (he emailed me a picture with the two standing next to eachother, hardly dating).

I just feel bad I introduced him to my family and friends….. whateva.

He's also the founder of Niyr website designs which he "started" in 2001 (if i'm doing the math right, which i'm might not be since i don't have a harvard phd or anything, he would have been a junior or senior in high school). According to the companies website he has designed award winning pages for several nike shoes, sony products, and my personal favorite…he designed the the microsite for the Audi R8!

This shows how easy it is for dumb, misinformed, naive athletes with money get duped. Further, this guy is likely a smooth talker who watched Wall Street one too many times and believed he could do better than Bud Fox.

  34. Posted by Eric | November 4, 2011 at 12:20 AM

I met Andrey a few times. Seemed like a nice enough guy. I guess I don't see much of a difference between what he did and what 99.9% of Wall Street does on a daily basis. Maybe they're not pocketing the money directly into their personal bank accounts, but through bonuses and pump and dump investments, the money eventually makes it's way into their pockets.

Hopefully he'll be able to avoid jail by rolling over on a bigger fish that the SEC is looking to take down.

  35. Posted by Linus | November 10, 2011 at 5:33 AM

I met him freshman year (2001). Back then he was into biology, had been drafted into a MLB team, and would later leave college to finish up the patent on a drug that cured "the strand of HIV that primates suffer from"

He has pretty formidable biceps though

  36. Posted by abc | November 10, 2011 at 10:19 AM

He's not from MN. He actually went to high school in Shawnee, KS and grew up in NM and UT. He didn't introduce Humphries and Kardashian, he knew Kris first and met Kim through him.

An internship? To do what? Get abused by you and go down with a sinking ship? Perhaps if you (Buddy) stayed off the internet and refrained from making comments (including on articles about yourself) and actually paid attention to your company, you'd be able to offer a Harvard-educated man an actual salary. No wonder your business is suffering; this is how you spend your "valuable" time..
