Cuts are going down at the House of Dougan today.

From the front lines:

“Layoffs started at Credit Suisse this morning, across the investment bank. All levels affected, including a good amount of senior guys.”

Apparently these reductions are part of a round cuts announced last year and were to be expected (though the “let’s have a chat”from HR this morning may still have been a slight surprise for those being asked to take a seat).

first CS gives employees bonus in CDOs, then they fire these employees. In the end the bank's book looks better, and they have "sophisticated investors" holding on to CDOs that no one wants. Genius move I must say.

on the bright side, the fired employees are now eligible to join the Credit Suisse Alumni Network. There are tickets for the NY Philharmonic for new enrollees.

"In the last year, they were more likely to be employed as waiters, waitresses, bartenders and food-service helpers than as engineers, physicists, chemists and mathematicians"

those that majored in engineering are not the waiters/waitresses/bartenders, but more likely those that have "creative writing" degrees.

Years ago when I was at Merrill, I once was sitting at my desk and "Human Resources" flashed across the caller ID on my land line – - just for a second, before I could answer.

I sometimes wonder if someone really mischievous / mean-spirited was just hanging out in HR reception and making random 1-ring calls to people.

There's a comedy movie premise for sure, ready-made.

no, that's really how incompetent Merrill is… can't even fire people right let alone run a bank

april is like emerging from a cave. I love taknig care of my plants, starting seedlings (for the first time ever after many phone consultations with my mom), and seeing my children relish the sun-shine and fresh air. Now, if I could only find a sunscreen that doesn’t use nano-technology. Any ideas? Happy April to you!
