Healthier than coffee, cheaper (and obviously more legal) than cocaine, and less juvenile than a 5-hour Energy drink, chia has undergone a total metamorphosis from 1980s punchline (Chia Pet’s “ch-ch-ch-chia” jingle still haunts Gen Xers) to superfood. Chia seeds as heavily promoted by Dr. Oz. The same guy who told my wife that my stool should be formed like a hockey stick. Very messy to achieve that what with it initially floating around in various shapes. The bastard.

Somehow, I think MacDougal has pulled a fast one on all of us. He has romanticized running extreme distances in one of the most dangerous places in North America without any shoes. Now every 25 year old overachiever is eating chia and trying to run ultramarathons. He's probably laughing his ass off reading about all of this.
I hear it also helps you retain fluids while running and eliminates the need to hydrate. So at least Christine who cannot leave the desk during trading hours no longer has to pee in the wastebasket under her desk.

There's a new company called Kentucky Chia that has developed a strain of chia that flowers early enough in the season so that it can be grown in North America. They are still growing their initial crop seeds and will begin selling them next year at much cheaper prices than the foreign grown chia. If this health food trend continues they'll get huge fast.
