Is there a dumber person on earth than Joe Gregory? Something like $800m in lehman stock at/near the peak, and didn't have the sense to sell, oh I don't know, $50m worth and stick it in a money market. No, this genius opted to keep it all in one highly leveraged stock, and then borrow against it.

$22 mm for a house on the north shore facing Connecticut? Unless it comes with a basement filled with $15 mm and a bottle of 25 year Oban, I'll pass. But thanks.

See, Bernie Ebbers used to boast that he'd never sold a share of Worldcom stock although it turned out he'd borrowed hundreds of millions against his portfolio. Angelo Mozilo, on the other hand, sold $400 million of Countrywide stock before the wheels came off. So, if your choice is to be a scumbag with nothing or a scumbag with $400 million, it's better by far to be a scumbag with $400 million. Plus, Angelo never went to the can, so he can still enjoy his money, which is nice. For Angelo.

It is amazing how much money is made by people who are really not very good at what they do.
