Overstock will be happy to take those coins off your hands (or out of your instawallet or whatever) in exchange for a nice area rug or some fresh bath towels, because Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne believes in limited government almost as much as he believes in suing hedge-fund short-sellers and taking out full-page newspaper ads to mock said hedge funds.
Overstock.com said it would now accept bitcoin, a virtual currency that has exploded in popularity since its introduction four years ago, at the company’s online shopping site.
“Digital currency will be an important part of the future and Overstock is excited to be the first major online shopping retailer to accept it,” Chairman and Chief Executive Patrick Byrne said.
Mr. Byrne added that because he “believes in limited government,” bitcoin “attracts me because it is a form of money that no government mandarin can will it into existence.”
