CVC Capital Partners

I know this is sort of vague but any information whatsoever that I couldn't glean off of their website would be much appreciated...

They bought Bernie's stake in Formula One a few years ago. Consolidated all the commercial revenue streams of the sport under one umbrella.

-good reputation over here in europe (i.e. delivered good returns)
-known more for financial engineering than for developing companies
-quite a few failed p2p in '07

I assume you're talking about CVC in Europe not CVC in America (now known as Court Square).

CVC Europe has a great reputation and has delivered superior returns - viewed right up there with Permira, BC Partners, Apax, etc.

Unfortunately, as with any of the aforementioned firms, their size, success and high-profile deals make them a target of the sometimes bad PR in Europe related to buyouts.

They have a good European model of having local nationals working on deals rather than a central European office in London trying to do deals in Italy, France etc. That is a huge differentiator in my opinion.

I agree with 6:04 that they're typically known more for their work as financial guys, not operating guys.

Hope this helps - can potentially get more specific if you tell me what you're looking for exactly.

Court Square isn't connected to CVC, it's the new firm all the old CVC USA team started. CVC's hired some new US people but NY is still a small office - the guy who ran Investcorp in the US, a guy from Ripplewood, etc.

Yes, they have done a number of deals in Hong Kong/China in the last few months. Mainly pre-IPO investments and convertible debts (Loan-to-Own schemes). Sector-wise, they have been buying companies in the paper and printing sectors. CVC is quite new to Hong Kong and they hired the former Chairman of Asian IB of Citigroup Francis Leung (aka Father of the China Red Chips stocks) in 2007 to run the China business.

Leung is a good operator and is well known for his financial structuring skills and connections in mainland China and Hong Kong (he's one of Li Ka Shing's confidants). Leung is also handy with bankruptcy/restructuring assignments. Afterall he and his then partner (Phil Tose) did run their Hong Kong based investment bank (Peregrine) to the ground during the Asian financial crisis a decade ago. It was bought out by BNP eventually.

Court Square is the old CVC (Citigroup Venture Capital). The firm spun out of Citigroup in 2006. It has been around since the late 1970s. The Tech practice was headed by Chip Schorr until he left to head the tech group at Blackstone. CVC Europe seperated from CVC in the later 90s / early 2000s I believe. Not a small office / new company (latest fund $3Bn+)

CVC is a $20bn PE fund. They just raised that amount to be split $15bn pan euro-US and the rest for Asia. This is not Courtsquare. CVC is based out of Luxembourg and started the US practice with about 9 guys 2 years ago which was the impetus for Courtsquare having to give up the CVC moniker. They recently did a deal to acquire less than 50% of Pilot Travel Centers in October. The US office is run by former head of PE at Investcorp Chris Stadler and former Ripplewood partner Rob Berner. hope this helps.
