Max rates vary dramatically and the ones that have not been converted have the lower max rates. No incentive for issuers to convert, the investors get screwed for not reading the fine print.
We were laughing about the lack of GS name in the news yesterday ... And they pushed this stuff the same as everyone else. Just pushed it with a bit more disclosure compared to some of the other shops.

Tax exempt issuers will convert if they can save off of where they would issue long term fixed ... can just call that 5%. The problems come in when they have swaps attached to the VRDNs or ARS that create an extra cost to conversion.
Also, most issuers are angry that they got talked into these products and then screwed so they have no incentive to help the brokers out who are now going to have to hold these products on their balance sheets.

Jason Mulgrew blogged about it last year or the year before. Sounds like it might have been full of the socially awkward.

Are the people discussing GM not in finance? It seems they are missing the point completely ... just my humble opinion.

Saying that it is short term pain to let AIG fail is once again missing all the connections and long term effects. Think about the budget crisis that many states are already facing, the employment crisis already happening in finance, and then their huge book of assets that would flood the market. Not sure a government bailout is a great solution, but their failure would create a lot of pressure in areas that are already hurt.
Also, with their failure I assume home insurance would be safe, but what about all the hurrican victims in TX ... not sure about this as I have not looked into it ... but just another issue to face.

I suppose we shall just have to wait and see. Right now some really cheap stuff out in the market to keep your money safe if you know where to look so not insanely worried. Great time for our (my?) generation to learn as well.

SIFMA is the weekly tax-exempt benchmark and has reset to 7.96% this week, even that is not getting the weekly variables (municipals) out of the door. Seeing discounts up to 10% for two weeks on TOB paper and high quality short term paper.

@37 - Also has a lot to do with creating a legacy.
@ 33 - Need the basic building blocks of economics/finance to build a better understanding of what is happening currently. And a lot of this stuff does hold if you get past the basic 101 and dig into the theories
