Is it too late to jump on the cheerleading bandwagon? If not, I'd like to second 4:06 and Anal.

8:35, that's Turkmenbashi, of Turkmenistan.

Nazarbayev runs Kazakhstan as a president for life who knows who pays the bills. Business-friendly for Americans, though one Russian partner had a story similar to AJ's: he committed suicide on a one man hunting trip by a rifle to the back of the head. Despite them suspending drilling permits for three months because Nazarbayev's son-in-law bought a neighboring field, I like the place.

@11:02 Persistence gets you a history lesson

910 or thereabouts, Rollo and his merry band settle in Normandie and become Norman. Apart from language, they're no more French than Wolfram von Eschenbach.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth's family is only tortuously related to the Normans. Consider the English ruling dynasties:
Angevins (actually French)
Tudors (Welsh)
Stuart (Scottish)
Orange (Dutch)
Hanover (German)
Windsor (nee Saxe-Coburg-Gotha) (German)

And to finish:
Darling: I'm as British as Queen Victoria!
Blackadder: So your father's German, you're half German, and you married a German!

@11:30 Second majors are for fun, economics pays the bills.

@11:33 Do you want us to applaud your ignorance, or just quietly nod in approval?

We're making insults based on national heritage and you decide *now* to toss out the obnoxious charge?

They make for a good one-off post in the style of Fake Steve Jobs. Plus, 'the Immer' is worth it all by itself.

Anal_yst, for the cause of why we "gave up our dreams of pursuing a field in which we're earnestly interested," my explanation was that we were born seventy years too late and in the wrong country.

to avoid the gun debate (and isn't human instinct to empty the magazine, and a damn fool thing to give every cop double mag glocks?), girl, were you making a Wire reference?

pink, in the south whites also call them the po po. Is it a regional thing that spread to all blacks, or a black thing that spread to all southerners?

12:08, 12:09: Mugabe decided the best people to receive the fruits of land redistribution were his major political supporters, and who was really going to say no with his North Korean-trained secret police killing political opponents as if it were Whack a Mole? The problem isn't land redistribution being a sucky idea, or even not paying white farmers, but that he gave the farms to people who were black revolutionary versions of Michael Brown.

2:55 Maybe if Tom Wilkinson had more hair, he could do the Black/Melmotte role.

Also, if we were to hypothetically bomb Carney's plane, would EP stay longer? And would we receive bonus points for going long on General Dynamics and Lockheed immediately prior to doing so?

Carney is probably the best one to answer this question, but what would have been the likelihood that the courts would have blocked the move? I don't have the slightest about the Unocal test that Bainbridge refers to, but broad readings of biz judgment have always been popular.

I would put up Jose Mourinho as the next editor. Not only does he have proven success with newly-acquired properties, he has experience in handling foreign bosses who are hated by vocal minorities within the country.
