Segway

113-gob-segway-race-sm.jpgFor the second time since they went on sale in 2002, Segway’s Personal Transporters (née Segway Human Transporter) are being recalled, due to software failure. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has said that the vehicles should stop being used immediately, as the wheels may suddenly reverse direction, causing riders to fall off. To date, six incidents of sustained head and wrist injuries have been reported, a number that we’re going to go out on a limb and say may be misleadingly low, since we know at least three guys who’ve gotten their knees skinned falling of these things but were too embarrassed to disclose the details of their accidents to any government agencies (or themselves).
Segway’s principal investors, Credit Suisse Group and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, who are readying the company for an IPO or sale, feigned expected sympathy, noting “any injury is too much to us.” No word yet on how this will affect DVD sales.
