Yesterday the Financial Times reported that the largest French bank, BNP Paribas, opposed the merger of Euronext with the New York Stock Exchange. Paribas then denied it in pretty strong terms, issuing a statement claiming "BNP Paribas does not have a preference for one or other of the current merger proposals involving Euronext.''
Now it turns out that the French are opposed to the merger, just not those French. It turns out its not Paribas. It's French President Chirac who opposes the merger, favoring "a Franco-German solution."
