Who Knows What Evil Lurks In the Shadows?

We spend a lot of time talking about hedge funds and private equity firms around here so regular readers might find it surprising when we mention that both these types of alternative financial firms—yes, they’re still separate types, just barely, for now—are widely regarded as secretive, stealthy, shadowy, and sneaky. And that those are not things that engender the trust of the public, therefore inviting politicians and regulators to step-in and start causing trouble.
But take a look at the graphic above from ABC News—you know, “Where more Americans get their news…”etc. The story is actually about how private equity funds have emerged from the shadows and into public consciousness. The whole treatment is pretty fair and accurate, more or less. But its definitely playing off of and into the public fears that the men running these things are, well, up to something.
