News breaks today of a massive gold deposit, the largest ever discovered in the so-called "British Isles." Richard Conroy, founding chairman of Ireland-based Conroy Diamonds and Gold, said the sight was discovered after researchers followed a particularly brilliant rainbow appearing after recent storms issued a formal statement claiming that more than 1 million ounces of gold may lie beneath a countryside village called Clontibret in Ireland's County Monaghan.
The gold reserve is reportedly worth close to $900 million. But don't expect an Irish gold rush. The costs of building and running a mine in the area are estimated to run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. What's more, the Irish don't own their own mining rights beyond a certain depth, according to reports. So the gold belongs to the government. We assume this curtailment of property rights is a result of the powerful influence of the leprechaun lobby in Ireland.
