In addition to routine quality checks, summit organizers have a school of six goldfish monitoring the recycled water supplied to the restrooms to ensure it’s clean and toxin-free. The goldfish, dubbed “honorary safety guards,” are housed in a tank in the basement of the Convention and Exhibition Center in southern Seoul, where the summit is taking place. It’s the first time the venue, which uses about 1 million tons of water a year, has used goldfish to monitor water quality, and quite possibly a first for the G-20.
