Looking for something to take your mind off the unfolding horror that is real life? Look no further than the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which on Sunday launched a real-time index tracking the wild swings of bitcoin. And, with any luck, soon you’ll be able to buy real-live futures contracts on the eminently imaginary currency, meaning you can have a piece of the virtual pie without having to deal with drug dealers, assorted fraudsters or the Winklevosstwins.

“Our products launched will bring greater transparency to the bitcoin market,” said a CME spokeswoman. “We have a long history of developing nascent markets across asset classes for this same reason.”

The bitcoin exchanges contributing data to CME’s indexes “have been extensively vetted,” the spokeswoman added.
