We here at dealbreaker dot com have been rather impatiently awaiting the arrival of Dow 20K for more than a month now.
We’re not going to lie: It’s been frustrating.
We’ve watched the Santa Trump rally fizzle out just in time for Christmas. We’ve watched the damned thing tick within less than four-tenths of a point of the great milestone, before retreating like a frightened woodland creature. We’ve gazed upon this extremely fashionable Dealbreaker banker bag, wondering if it would ever find the good home and proud parent it so richly deserves.
And then, almost as soon as the market opened and before we even had our second cup of coffee, boom! There is was.
We’re not going to lie: It’s a little disappointing.
We’ve been cheated of the slow buildup, a countdown of sorts, the great cathartic moment sometime around midday when that fifth-digit “1” we’ve been looking at for 18 years finally turned into a “2,” with everyone aware enough to cheer and celebrate and forget for a moment all of the horrors unfolding on the other side of the big columns on Broad Street. But maybe this is how it had to happen: Rip it off like a bandage and get it over with before people know what’s happening and can start to overthink it, and thus ruin it. Such is how it goes sometimes.
Anticlimactic as it was, Dow 20K deserves something special. And that something special is the aforementioned DB banker bag, which shall now go to the reader who comes closest to guessing today’s close. Will the DJIA be able to hold the line and complete the second-fastest 1,000-point jump in history? Will this rally, like the one before it, wilt and die and leave us back in the 19,000s? Tell us in the comments. Per usual, standard Price is Right rules, closest to today’s close without going over wins.
